Title: My grandson's first deer
Post by: steen on November 21, 2016, 10:10:39 PM
I had the best season ever and never killed a deer! My Grandson asked to take Hunter safety this spring and I was caught off guard. He was just 10. He passed and I took him in a trial camping trip on horseback in our hunting camp. He had a blast. He did not draw a for tag so I had to put my tag on the back burner. He broke his ankle two weeks before the trip and it took him out of school 4 days. I prayed the Xrays were wrong and.....they were!! My son decided he could hike the mountain but could only go the weekend. My son decided to come with. We did not connect with a buck but had a blast. Hunted at home some and I had him the whole last weekend. Friday he got out of school early thank goodness. It was pretty cold with a NE wind so I tried to block it some. Had a two hour sit and he wanted to walk but I knew he couldn't get set up quick enough for a snap shot so we decided we just need to sit and wait for a dumb spike to come out. And a half an hour before dark wouldn't you know it out comes a doe with a dumb spike. My Grandson could see the doe and found the spike. By the time he shot it was close to 40 yds away! He calmly set up and shot....hit him and again calmly put another shell in. Never needed that second shot cause he went down. When I said you got him he just burst into tears for about 30 seconds and then back to elation. Not to mention grandma!! I am so proud of him and can't wait till next year. It took a lot to get him there. Wow!!

That is a great hunt. Tough kid, broke/sprang ankle right before the hunt and still does the hunt and nocks down his first buck. Plenty of memories to go around, great job team.

I can relate.  My daughter asked to take Hunter Ed this year and I was not prepared for that .  I had been looking at next year.  She got through it and I was getting her set up to go deer hunting and she surprised me again by saying that she wasn't ready for deer this year, that she wants start by going rock chuck shooting in the spring and then she will be ready to go deer hunting next year.

Having my son with for the two days he could hunt Eastern WA was fun too! I think next year will be grand.
Thanks all.
