Title: Garmin Rino 650 or Oregon 650T

I'm new to the whole GPS other than the car units. So any help from users is great.

I wouldn't worry about memory, but the Rinos are heavy. The factory battery is rechrgeable. You can use AAs but they require an adapter that is extra.

The radio comes in very handy for me if I'm hunting with my buddies. The radio uses the same Family Radio Service channels as Midlands and Motorolas, so you're good to go with other handhelds.
I will say that the screen on the Rino is small. That's really the only complaint I have with it. I use the Onxy chips when hunting in Montana, but I don't yet have one for WA. Personally, I'd go with the Rino again due to the radio and the ability to transmit your location to others that have the Rino (if you want to do that).

This year my hunting partner stopped moving, he dropped it and did not know it. His radio showed .47 miles from me, when he got back he took my radio and was able to walk right to where it had dropped from his pack.

Cabela's forgot to take down the sale tag from last week so I got 3 of them ( 1 for me and 2 for buddies ) for $299. Also ordered a Montana chip and picked up the Id-Or-Wa chip ( assume this chip is the same as having a separate chip for each state? ). Wish I would have known the rechargeable batteries weren't included but I will order them.
I assume the Onx chip just drop's in the slot under the batteries? Will I have to set up anything once I put the chip in or does it set itself up ?

That is one of my favorite features within Onxmaps..

:yeah: After More research that's it. Originally had the Washington chip , then saw the state chip for the same price so figured might as well get 3 states for the price of one :chuckle:.
Going in the morning to exchange it for a Washington chip and grab the rechargeable batteries.

Post by: huntandjeep on November 27, 2016, 06:32:04 PM: Was reading about my GPS and noticed a 16 hour battery life. Is that on regular AA batteries? Also when the battery dies like sitting in a closet for a couple months , do you lose all your waypoints and stored data ?

My 650 runs a long time on the rechargeable battery, but I turn the radio function off unless I'm hunting with others that have radios. I also keep the backlight pretty dim. There are things you can do to improve battery life, but if you're going back country, it is best to have a solar charger or spare batteries.
