Title: missing some decoys?
Post by: metlhead on November 26, 2016, 01:25:19 PM
Another great shoot today with a full limit of decoyed birds. Found some decoys that seemed very strage to be left, so I did a sweep for bodies. None. Anyone missing blocks or know of a someone, they will be safely returned. Tell me roughly how many, what kind, and where they were. I have your initials also.

I ask myself "How can somebody leave their decoys behind?????)     :bash: :bash: :bash:

And then I remember the time I left 3 rifles at the rifle range on the bench.       :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Someone probably stashed them so they don't have to pack them out and back in for every hunt.

I ran into that before, even a boat stashed under brush and limbs. It was obvious they were left on purpose. This could be a different deal though, would be interested to see how they were left. Maybe we'll find out later.

They were set up out on a flat, hundreds of yards from shore, in a spot with no cover. No one out there all day.

:dunno: I know some old guys that leave there decoys in the swamp and field, because they have a hard time packing them in and out.  But they hind them good.

So... at the end of your day you went and retrieved them?

Were they spread out like someone had set them in a spread as if to hunt over them or were they bunched up like someone didn't have long enough line and or weight somewhere else and they drifted to said "flat" where they hung up. I have had on the Columbia my decoys move as a result of water rising a foot, waves from barge traffic, current, and wind (all on the same day). I didn't feel safe wading in after some of them as deep as it had gotten. I had to use the weight from a decoy and some line to snag and retrieve the last half dozen. If they weren't set up like someone was going to hunt over them then someone probably had some get away.

I don't know. If they were set up like someone was going to hunt over them I'd contact WDFW and let them know what you found. Who knows if they were left the person(s) could be dumb enough to contact WDFW and say someone stole their decoys while they were briefly away from their set up.

Prayerfully its not a worst case scenario and the hunter(s) have gone under.

We have left decoys out grabbed lunch and came back, so someone didn't jump in our spot before.  If in open water, you don't assume someone will mess with them.  We used to do this on Vancouver Lake and use layout boats to hunt out of.  It worked pretty good back in the day.  Unfortunately Sauvie's Island is planted for the birds and it sucks them all over that way.  So, you sit there and listen to the battery of gun fire, while you cross your fingers for anything to fly by on the Washington side.  For the most part.  Some spots still hunt good, if you know where they are.

Picked them up on the way out. They may have drifted to the location. You can see anyone out there for a good mile. Had to settle on Friday. I hunted Thursday and no blocks were in this spot then. I was the only human Saturday from first light till I left at noon. Hoping this media might help find the owner. A small note was also posted at the ramp.

I got lucky yesterday. I went to do some work on a house and low and behold, there was the string of seven brand new decoys I lost last year. They had found them a quarter of the way around the island.
