Been hunting the south east section of ryderwood gmu.
Friday we saw two huge cows and I should have shot it but wanted to get a little closer and the cows were lost into the thick timber.
Saturday we saw nothing.
Sunday(today) we only saw one deer.
Last year we got on a bunch of elk but this year it's almost barren
Can anyone give me some helpful information ?
Bow Hunting the sierra pacific land there. We have 2 deer and 2 elk tags to fill.
Every day we are road hunting for a hour then find a good spot and then get to hiking in the woods off the main roads and into places we think no one goes. Today I think we hiked 5-6 miles. Saw a little bit of elk sign but nothing too fresh. We have parked at a few of the closed gates and started hiking back behind them but nothing.
I got Monday and Tuesday left for elk hunting so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks in advance.

Used to hunt Ryderwood, 20 years ago.

lot less elk in that area now with all the hoof rot. last yr, my son had a muzzy cow tag in that valley and almost 100% we seen had hoof rot, and we found a lot of bone piles. Good luck!

It sounds like you are doing the right thing. Now it is just a matter of hours of effort. Good luck to you.

We've been dropping in on the north east side from Vader/Ryderwood hiking in and have seen a few small bunches but not able to connect. Wednesday had 7 cows 1 calf and a spike at 167 yrds but could never close the distance before they busted us. Friday back in and seen another small bunch almost similar but only 8 head with 1 spike. Had them at 101 yrds and just couldn't get them to turn and lost them into the jack firs. Day 1 had 4 limpers day 2 zero sign of hoof rot while watching them and even following track. Moral of the story, they are in there and some are still healty. Just need to be patient and persistent. And yes we are bow hunting as well.
P.S we've seen 5 deer nothing with horns.

I know they are in there it's just hard to find them. They are pretty spooked. There is sign everywhere but just hard to get on to them.
Yesterday at the end of the day driving out we spooked up 3 cows but they were gone quick, and those 3 spooked up a nice 4 point buck but just wasn't quick enough.
I think I'll be eating tag soup since I'm not sure if I can get back down there before the 15th.
Count total for 4 days in the woods
6 elk
4 does
1 buck

Don't be discouraged too much. A good day in the woods seeing animals is a GREAT DAY. Granted it doesn't put food on the table but again, you had better days than many others.

I have been blessed by the boss( the wife) one more day of hunting! I'll be heading back down to ryderwood to do some chasing on Saturday.
Wish me luck. And hopefully I'll have a picture for you all. Still got my elk and deer tag to fill.

My dads buddy had a tag so we went to ryderwood. Every day we go down there we see at least one elk. Saturday he saw some down in a cut so he drove to the road they were off of and was able to get a shot at 70 yards. He got her and there was about 7 more elk with her.
Good luck

Was down in Winston for thanksgiving weekend, didn't see much elk but was able to fill my deer tag. Due to the elk probably being on weyco land. Headed down to the general area, and I'm hunting Ryder wood for the last stretch. Going to try out the north east part of the unit along the Pe'ell border.

good luck, i was down there last saturday we biked in 7 miles and found some fairly fresh beds and poo but nothing worth getting too excited for. We did A LOT of moving and just nothing fresh. Small bunches if not satelites moving around not staying long. Good luck and knock something down!

Just got back to my cabin from a wet cold day in ryderwood. Honestly can say disappointed at all. Covered good amount of ground and ran into some fresh sign followed it in had 3-4 cows across a swamp moving and forth almost like pacing. Never had a visual but could definitely hear them. Was just too thick too go in after them. On my way out was glassing one final cut when another hunter bumped 3 elk that headed down in the cut I was glassing. We went down in to get a visual never saw them until they were headed back into the timber. Backed out and saw where they came out onto the road and into the thick again. Overall great day spent with my girlfriend. Oh yes and bumped a doe on the way out. Headed back out again tomorrow.

We didn't have as good of luck as you. We got into some crazy snow. There was up to a foot in places and we did a lot of hiking. We didn't get too much driving due to the snow. We did hike 3 miles in snow which is a lot harder . Didn't find any real new sign of elk. Especially with the new snow I was hoping to see some new tracks and get into them. Only tracks I saw were deer. I did bump and see 14 does (buck only unit)
That's it for me for elk hunting. The boss( wife) said no more especially with our new 4 month old baby
Good luck to you tomorrow.
