My boat needs a full polish, 2009 and it's looking bad. Hard to believe but I keep searching and can't find person who does good aluminum polishing. Any suggestions? Thanks Mike
-
I don't see any barnacles yet. :chuckle:
-
Aluminum is supposed to look like that. You use the boat for fishing or cruzing the blvd picking up chic's.
-
Looks like a fishin' machine. Get a v-drive if you want a shiny boat.
-
Just run the heck out of it all winter and she will polish herself.

There is a place in Arlington but I would think there would be one closer to you.
-
Can't be that hard to do. I'll do it for let's say $800.00.
-
If that's bad mine must be beyond terrible. Bought in '90 I think, never done anything to the outside other than hose it down.

Says who?
Says a guy that owns aluminium, that spends 50 plus days a year on the salt water and would rather have a cocktail and relax than worry about cleaning a shinny boat after every trip. Salt away, quick scrub and done. :chuckle:

I can respect that decision, however it doesn't necessarily mean it's "supposed" to look like that. ;)

It's like a giant flasher when trolling for salmon

Rob's boat is a mirror and super cool, but way too much maintenance for me. I like the dull - grey look, after a few years in the salt they look perfect! I also like a quick garden hose and put it away for next time. I started to polish mine last year, holy crap :bdid: I decided it looked really good grey, that is tough work... So makes me appreciate the work Rob puts into his North River...

Thanks Mike but let's not confuse everyone, once you get two years into yours, you sell it and upgrade bigger....... :chuckle:

Anyone use Shark Hide or any similar products? I would like to get this thing looking good again before I trade it in.

I've tried it, unless they have figured out a effective way to spray it on, I won't try it again.
It dulls the finish, so counter productive after spending time polishing. :twocents:
-
I would never put an aluminum boat on the road or in the water without applying shark hide first period! Amazing product!
-
Well I need to get this boat cleaned up before I trade it in. And by these pics you can see the aluminum needs attention. It has held up well using Salt Away and Terminator when I wash it and flush it but it's time. On my 3rd set of trailer brakes also and finally upgraded to discs. I am too afraid to start buffing and polishing because once you start you have to finish :yike:
-
Get on it!
-
Aluminum still looks really good - just some surface corrosion. I would steer way clear of doing any polishing - as it adds a ton of maintinence . Shark hide every 6-12 months it's would still look perfect.

These guys are in Portland. Talked to them at the sportsman show a few years ago. People don't like to talk price without seeing the project, but they did say about $700 including shark hide.

The trick to a good polish is to let it soak, overnight is preferred..... :yike:

Yep...looks good to me.

Don't they sell something at the automotive for spraying on aluminum rims that might shine it up. :dunno:

I do think I remember this pic from a couple years ago now that you mention it and the discussion about tieing tight at high tide....

Yep, went over sometime Friday night in the marina, still don't know why... frickin' sucks!

That does suck, sorry to see that Loki, I thought maybe you reposted pics from a few years back at first. Hopefully it's an easy recovery for you

I don't understand. Is your wife busy or just ill-trained?

Lokidog, had a buddy who trailered his alumaweld on a roller trailer not a bunk. Later to find out the rollers put too much stress on his bottom where the plate was welded to the stringers and a hairline crack started. Put water into a section of his boat bottom. Wonder if you have water seeping into that boat that rolled it over. Tied to the dock it wouldn't matter what the tide was, the dock goes up and down.

Hey, you wanna compare fishing pics??? You might want to put your teeth in first before popping off. Just let me know either way scrub.

Hey,
The boat sits on bunks. I'm guessing there is a slow leak in a seam and the bilge wore out the batteries over a two week period. Still odd it would have filled up enough to tip overnight unless a big wake hit it and got the water sloshing or something weird. They'll be doing a float test after New year's, but it looks like it will be totaled, thank goodness for insurance.

Lokidog,
I will sell you mine, if your going to replace it!

Good that you have good in surface on that thing.

I wonder if only one half of the bottom filled up with water making it extremely heavy on the starboard side thus rolling it over. The bottoms are framed in with aluminum stringers so it depends on the design but water cant necessarily fill up everything equally under the floor. I am going to check on my insurance today

If that bottom frame doesn't allow for draining (holes) then I'm surprised Alumaweld has been in business this long.
-
Sorry for the thread jack Trophyelk, was just trying to be funny in it.... ;)
If I recall correctly, the space between the stringers is pretty much filled with foam although there is enough space for water to run from the front to the back around it.
-
if you have foam in the boat floor the "foam" will get saturated with a keel leak or transom leak and will be impossible to dry out! Your boat will get very heavy and use way more fuel. I do fiberglass repair for a living and seen this a bunch. Im sure most of you know this but just sharing some info! Merry xmas everyone!!

They should be using closed cell foam in boats. I know the foam in my Lund is
