Nice!
I think I'm going to throw some cages out this weekend if I have time. All these pictures of everybody getting fur is making me jealous. I have no bait ready for cat trapping either so all the more reason to get out and trap.

Curious to know what you are using for bait for the fox? I know of some in my area and would love to trap one or two as well. Any pictures of how you wrap up your cat baits?
Title: Re: Jakelands 2016-17 season
Post by: JakeLand on December 22, 2016, 09:05:58 AM
For fox I'm using some with beaver and some with duck carcasses but I'm just catching cats so far so this weekend I'm going to head up even higher to where maybe the cats won't be
Last year I had some fox digging and terrorizing my cages so I don't know how many but I have pics of 2 different fox from my trail cameras in one area last year
I'll take some pics tonight on how I wrap the bait

A ton of snow has come down up there the fox was all around a cage and ate the teaser chunk of bait at the door of the cage but didn't go in
He's making me get a headache from the dance we've been having these past few seasons

But I got 1 beaver at 25lbs

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20161228%2Fa6f234cf9e31174d0248346e7be16c3d.jpg&hash=2ef55c7e134b03bd19181247066d9e70a48ec1c2)

I guess more cat and marten bait !

Post by: Humptulips on December 27, 2016, 11:25:24 PM
Jake,
A thought on the fox. Zero experience here so you can take this or leave it but I'm wondering if you set a swim through both doors open with bait in the middle, possibly under the trap if that would give them enough confidence with being able to see clear through to go into trap.
Title: Re: Jakelands 2016-17 season
Post by: JakeLand on December 28, 2016, 05:38:48 AM
Kinda exactly what I'm going to try and do except with all the snow up on here I'm going to set the cage and not brush it in BUT build a canopy above it to keep it from getting snowed in hoping use a half down leaning tree and set under it but with lots of open space
If that makes any sense at all......

Right now I'm waiting on the cops to show up on my trap line!!
A guy went to my cage and released a cat and destroyed the cage
I followed his tracks to his cabin and he admitted doing it and is freaking out on me so I'm going to press charges on him
With the help of a friend  I got the RCW with which he will be charged with

In a nutshell, you cannot TOUCH a trap unless it is yours, you have written permission from the owner or it is on your private property illegally.

Is there no exact amount he gets cited for from WDFW?  Like having a barbed hook or speeding? If not, then maybe this will help get something like that on the books.

It has to go to the Prosecutor and he will decide whether or not it gets prosecuted. Depends on if he has bigger fish to fry.

I had 3  cages visited by cats but no takers
And I caught the bait thief at one of my cat cages a young female pine marten!! I gently got her out of the cage to be able to see if she was a female or not which was confirmed. So while she cussed me out I asked her to quit stealing my cat bait and released her . She ran right to the nearest tree and only went about 10' up and sat and watched me until I left

I got a call from the wildlife cop today !! They are pressing charges on him and citing him  they expect good results !
It helped that I had pictures of everything and a cop come even though it would have been way faster and easier if I would have had a state patrol or a game officer come out instead of a sheriff but this is my first time actually catching a idiot so I guess it's the learning curve

I know that's where you trap them, hake but they can be found lower down sometimes. Few areas near me are about 2500' and all my buddy's that go snow wheeling see there tracks regularly and occasionally see one running around. Seems near me they are lower down and smaller in size

First got a late starting at 6:30 and then got stuck in the avalanche control for an hour and a half  :bash:
Finally got over the pass to check traps and wouldn't you know it every trap was sprung and messed up by ya you know it COYOTES  :bash: I've never seen this many coyotes at this elevation before with this much snow! But the one cool thing is that I went in a new area and cut some fox tracks so using some info from Machias I got 2 cages set  I'm crossing my fingers

I'm thinking next year it's going to be a 2 week deal at the end of January and maybe the weather will be a little better for trapping. Ron went with yesterday and helped tune up my cat line. he's got a Marten cage out and his cages are pretty slick for sure I've still got 5 marten cages 1 fox cage 6 cat cages and 2 beaver traps out until Sunday then I'm going to take a break until mid February

Thanks ! Had to pull my swim through cages for otter because some coho salmon are still running and that's all I'm catching there but it's pretty easy you open one door and they just swim out like nothing happened

I keep getting asked what's up with the yellow rubber duck in the traps . Well i started putting them in as just a curiosity for the cats and most of the time they will chew the hell out of them ! I just get them at the dollar store they may do absolutely nothing but why not it seems to not spook them

Thanks it's been a good year for a lot of people! I took a couple weeks off to just take a break but I've got a double handful of cages out now again , going to try and catch a few more and call it good come the first of March
