Looking to make a trip this spring to find some big kokanee. Can anybody give me some lakes that hold such fish. I'm use to the little buggers out of the SW WA reservoirs. Thanks
-
Alder lake in Elbe has some kokes in it, but it's a bit of a haul for you!!
-
Roosevelt is a perennial big kokanee factory.
-
The OP is looking for big ones, the kokes in Alder are not very big. Still fun to catch, but they don't get much size to them. His SW reservoirs get larger ones.
-
I think Riffe has decent size Kokes

riffe has coho. No kokes.
-
Roosevelt, there are some nice ones. Read a report of a 24" 4.5 lb caught a couple days ago. Check NW fishing reports.
-
Roosevelt is a world class Kok fishery... 20" fish are the norm out there
-
Not my thing, but Merwin, and perhaps Yale (Lewis R.) is where all the Oregon guys go when they come up to fish. I thought Riffe had Kokes too. :dunno: Mayfield has little tiny ones from my experience.
-
Riffe has landlocked coho and chinook, if I remember correctly. I could be wrong, but a true kokanee is a landlocked sockeye. I think most confuse all landlocked salmon as kokanee. :dunno:

Your right, Kokanee is a land locked Sockeye not Coho or other land locked salmon.

Yep. Mostly coho. No Kokanee

Don't overlook Chelan, have not personally fished it but have seen some monster Kokes come out of there.

I've fished Yale. Tons of jokes, but not big uns.
Merwin has the bigger fish of these 3 reservoirs

palmer lake

Roosevelt is my go-to fishery. Fished it yesterday. Plenty of Rainbows but no Kokes....although it was an awesome year for Kokes.

Not a koke in Palmer anymore.

I had so much fun there catching great koke's, what a bummer
-
No kidding. I can't remember the exact name, but I believe they contracted some sort of parasite during last winter and basically killed them all. That was the bloodstock strain for many of the lakes in the state and was considered the best. The fish never surfaced nor were any found along the shores. Apparently the disease caused them to sink.

Lake wallowa in NE Oregon
-
Keechelus produced some 13-14" kokes for me last summer.
-
Had fun with my new boat. Rick

That thing is a chub!
-
built like a tuna!!
-
Roosevelt????
-
Bearmanric, that there is the perfect Kokanee!!
I have caught a few 20 inchers out of Alder but large kokes are few and far between. Most are around 12" range.
The Silvers in Riffe get pretty portly between 1 and 2 pounds are about average. Both Alder and Riffe are good for limits of fish. And Alder has a 10 Koke daily limit.
I have only fished Merwin once and we pulled two limits of 14 - 20 in fish and one 22 inch fatty.
-
yes Roosevelt. Rick
-
I've got some pictures somewhere. We used to slay those suckers in Roosevelt.
Biggest I remember was right around 25" and built about like that chubby one already posted. Soft mouthed Devils for sure but easy enough to get used to and net.
Roosevelt just has big fish period. My biggest rainbow, biggest walleye and biggest Kokanee are all from Roosevelt. Also my biggest lake sturgeon :chuckle:
