Title: Couple of questions regarding bows and arrows
Post by: freezerfull on January 02, 2017, 03:33:55 PM
I've been dabbling with the idea of picking up a cheaper compound bow for a while and finally pulled the trigger on a cheaper package bow that has some middle of the road accessories. My first question is regarding arrow weight. I have access to some warrior shafts in .400/ 8.2 gpi and .340/8.9 gpi. Now my buddy runs 125 gr fp/bh's on these shafts from a Mathews monster @ 58 lbs/ 29 dl. However other bow hunters I know tend to claim the spines are too flexible, especially on the 400 shafts for the tip weight. Is there formula for stiffness of spine regarding bh weight? My second question is on draw weight. I'm under the impression that most bows run smoothest from there max poundage, is this true?

I do believe most bows are best at half turn off of max poundage.

What shaft weight you need will depend on you arrow length and draw weight.

My guess is that a 125gr broadhead will be to heavy for a 400 shaft, also depends on your draw weight.

This is the shaft chart from the Warrior Site

Jason,
Thanks for the quick response. Looks like I'll be on the line between the 340 and 400 spine. Does that chart specify a bh weight? My draw length is 29" and the bow I purchased is a 60lb. Do you know roughly how much poundage is lost with limbs turned 1/2 under max? The reason I went 60 is The information Id gathered suggested it's better to run a 60 near max than run a 70lb bow down to 60lb. Thanks

With your bow turned down a half turn top and bottom you'll probably be actually pulling 60lb.

I always run towards the stiffer side when caught between two different shafts on the chart. Also play with your bow by shooting all the way turned down then back it off a half turn. See if you notice a difference and go from there. The key to great shooting is a well tuned bow. Good luck and have fun
