Well I have been out 3 times this year and the last two times I went out I hit coyotes both times and didn't recover either one.
Today was different. My buddy and I went out on some private land that I know of that has produced every time I have been out there. Our first stand calling into a grape vineyard produced nothing, so we moved on to the next spot. At our second stand we called for about ten minutes off and on when I caught movement to the left of me about 100 yards away. It was a decent sized coyote that was trying to find the source of all the racket. I lip squeaked and it started trotting towards me. It stopped about 60 yards out, a little too far for my liking with my shotgun loaded with #4 buck . I again lip squeaked and it came about 10 yards closer and stopped while staring straight at me. It started looking around nervously like it was going to duck into the trees, so I waited for the next available moment to get my gun on him. Luckily he had an itch so I took that opportunity to get my gun up and put the bead on him. He turned as if he was going to take off into the trees so I decided to take a chance and let some buckshot fly. I hit it higher than I wanted and ended up taking out a chunk of its spine. It immediately dropped and we put it down for good with a follow-up shot from my buddys AR. After taking pics and checking the dog out, my buddy ranged the shot at 52 yards. Not as close as I was hoping, but I will definately take it. We estimated the coyote to be about 25-30 pounds and 1 to 2 years old. I need to thank Rainshadow for giving me a couple of his calls. I used one of his howlers to call the coyote in. For size comparisons, I am 6'2'' and 215lbs.
