Title: Anybody ever build an AK?
Post by: Night goat on January 07, 2017, 04:03:52 PM
I want an AK pretty bad.

I don't have 700+$ to buy one.

If I buy a receiver... Can I build an AK style rifle for less than buying one? I know the platform pretty well, so, it can't be that hard....

That's what they cost now? $700?  :yike:

I remember when the cheap laminate WASRs were $360. Heck back then they used to tell of how they were $250 a few years prior to that.

They are a little more involved than an AR.

For stamped steel rifles you will need to rivet the Trunnions to the reciever and press the barrel and pin it to the trunnion. If it's a new US made barrel you will need to locate the rear sight block, gasblock and front sight assy and pin those too. You also would need to locate and drill the gas port in the barrel. The trigger guard is also riveted to the reciever. There are fixtures for doing the riveting that are available for purchase and sometimes you can borrow them from locals.

If you are mechanically inclined and have the right tools it's definately doable, but may not save much money.

yeah cabelas had a wasr 10 used for around 675-7

All American armory in Bow manufactures AK rifles but those are 1200+$, pretty beautiful rifles if you ask me

I wonder if I could buy a receiver, barrel, and the guts and have them do the pressing (this is where Aks get the reputation as being inaccurate, especially with the milled.receivers, I had an opportunity to listen in to an ex spetsnaz soldier explain that most spetsnaz prefer stamped to milled as there is less damage done to the barrel) of the barrel to the receiver... I've only built muzzleloaders, never anything modern... I have an AR, but... There is just something about that punchy ka-chunk feel of a piston driven rifle...

There's a thread somewhere on here about a guy that made a bunch of AKs.  It was the guy with the Dobermans in his pic.  I seem to recall he did a very good job putting them together.

That's it!

I knew it was Muley something.

Sorry if any Muley feelings were hurt or otherwise damaged by my post.

You can also get some builder info in my hunting ar thread. Seth is an AK guy for sure.
