Title: Arrow help please
Post by: jrebel on February 15, 2009, 04:25:35 PM
I need help.....I currently shoot Goldtips and are not very happy.  I have not bought new arrows in many years.  I want the best hunting arrow I can find.  I have two bows, one shoots 70lbs (switchback) the other 60lbs (DXT).  Both have fall away rests.  Both are very fast. Is there one arrow that will work for both?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

If your arrows are properly spined you should not have any trouble with gold tips. Could you be more specific with your trouble?

at longer range with my broadheads my arrow flies crazy.  Impact point is very sparatic.  For the last few years I have had to pick the best few arrows to hunt with.  Some would fly great and others were all over the place.  All else being the same.  Blazer veins with sonic 125 heads.

Hmmm.... multi-facted questions are never easy....  Yes, one arrow could do both pretty well.  However, the 125 grain broadhead will most likely be a limiting factor in making this happen.  With 125 grain heads the 70#  will likely need a 300 spine arrow, and the 60# will need a 340 spine.  The Gold Tips you have are probably 55-75, which are 340 spine (roughly).  This would make them OK for the 60# DXT and the 125 grain tips if the tuning on the bow is really good; any tuning flaws will make this combo show up as underspined (not flying well), but a lighter head will render the 340 spine very forgiving.  The one cam designs have a radical cam that pushes them towards a higher spine arrow for that heavy of a head.  The 70# bow is underspined at 125 grain heads, but it will fly great with an 85 grain head and marginal with a 100 grain head.  My opinion is that your best bet is to use your existing Gold Tip arrows with the 60# bow with 100 grain heads and then get 300 spine arrows for the 125 grain heads with the 70# bow. The Gold Tips made more than 2 years ago are still the ones that were made in America, and they are good, but the newer ones are made in Mexico, and they aren't worth buying at any price.  Again, just my opinion, but it's based on experience with that same problem.

definately lighten up your broadhead. 100 gr. or even 85's may work. I switched to quick spin vains a couple of years ago for the same problem. Problem solved.
