Title: Wyoming - Clarity on General Archery Seasons
Post by: chukar hunter on January 18, 2017, 08:10:03 AM
https://wgfd.wyo.gov/Regulations/Regulation-PDFs/REGULATIONS_CH7

Planning my first OTC archery elk hunt in WY and need some clarity.  Page 14 of the general elk hunting rules and regs lists "Special Archery Seasons".  Are ALL of these units open per the dates listed if a GENERAL ELK Tag is drawn?  Or only able to hunt a specific unit if you draw the limited quota tag?  Example:

Unit 1:  100 Limited Quota Tags - No General Season  - Per pg 14, can a general season archer with applicable additional general archery license hunt 9/1-9/30?

Unit 3: General Season 9/15-10/14 - Per pg 14, an archer can hunt earlier 9/1-9/14.

Clarity would help for planning.  Hard to decipher the regs.

Unlike Washington, Wyoming does not issue separate tags for archery, modern firearm, and muzzleloader.

You can only hunt in the unit your license is valid for.

Using your example of unit 1, type 1: the general season is October 15 - November 30. You can hunt during this period using any equipment.

However, if you purchase a separate archery license for $30 you can hunt using archery equipment September 1-30. If you don't fill the tag you can still hunt using modern equipment (or archery, muzzleloader) starting October 15.

FYI crossbows are legal archery equipment in Wyoming.

Bob,  that is my understanding as well, but in the example above Unit 1, does not have a general season, so your comment applies only to Unit 3?

So outstanding question, if paying the "special archery licence"  $30, can I still hunt Unit 1(No General Season) in the earlier dates provided on the table on page 14?  Or can I only hunt Unit 1, if I draw the limited quota license, and purchasing the archery license just allows earlier access to that specific unit?

"Regular" season is a more appropriate term. Unit 1 is a draw only unit. You can only hunt it with a unit 1 license. You can't hunt any other unit.

If you draw a unit 1 license, and you pay $30 for the archery license you can hunt the month of September with archery equipment.

Unit one is a tough draw unless you have 8 points

It's also my understanding that Wyoming does not have non-resident OTC elk tags.

Randy Newburg's podcast #48 covered Wyoming as well as the other western states various applications process.
Here's part of the episode's description:

We also discuss the drawing process for most the western elk states and how you can get more details on each state by watching our Elk Talk videos on YouTube.  If you decide to not go elk hunting each year, that's your decision.  We've given you the road map.  Now go elk hunting.
