This is not good! Two of the commission's biggest hunting and recreational fishing supportive Commissioners are up for reappointment and some in the commercial fishing industry are trying to block their reappointment.
Miranda Wecker has been reappointed but if the WA Senate votes against her appointment she is gone.
Larry Carpenter's term ended in December and needs to have Governor Inslee reappoint him.
This movement on the commercial side is a direct result of the feud between Oregon DFW and WA DFW where Oregon has gone back on their word to reduce commercial allocation on the Columbia to increase the recreational allocation.
A form letter is on this link which will send a letter to Inslee and a powerful Senate leader to prevent this things from happening: http://nwsportsmanmag.com/editors-blog/effort-mounted-to-head-off-removal-of-2-washington-fish-commissioners/

We actually have hunting and fishing commissioner's?

Who is trying to block the Carpenter appointment?

Are these the same folks who support Unsworthy?

:yeah:

There is already a person who works for the commercial fishing industry on the commission, if we lose one or both of these commissioners and gain one or two who would be more likely to side with commercials it would be bad news for recreational fishing.
Like bigtex said they both have been very good to hunters and have supported the good changes we've seen.
Obviously the commission is nowhere near perfect but losing these two would NOT be good.

Are these Commissioners supporting the hunting and sport fishing fee increase package?
-
These two are real friends of the recreational side. Everyone needs to get on board and flood your senator with correspondence. Inslee already tried this last year. If you want the commission to support recs, you need to help keep these two in place.
-
Why do they want to double the fees that sportsmen pay?
-
That isn't being driven by these commissioners. They have been pushing for recs to get much more for their money
-
All policy asks are voted on by the commission, simply asking if they voted yes?
-
What is the position of these commissioners regarding the commissions wolf plan?

Can folks use this link to comment about the commissions agenda to almost double our fees?

The OP's link still doesn't open.
I'm a little confused. Do we even have any idea of the names of candidates who would replace these people? I don't know about you guys, but I'd like more info about possible replacements. I'm not in love with our wildlife commission and feel no great anxiety at the prospect of losing two of them. They've done us no favors with the wolves, the cost of licenses for the return in investment, or by pressuring the director to clean up his enforcement leadership. What if their replacements are better for hunters and fishers? Before hopping on the bandwagon, assuming these positions are being taken over by evil, salivating gillnet supporters, and writing to the Governor to make sure that these two commissioners keep their seats, let's make sure that's the best choice.
More information is needed before I write the Governor on this.
-
That link is posted all around the fishing sites too. Probably too busy and can't handle the traffic.
Agree, Pman the commission hasn't really seemed to make a wildlife wonderland; but when one of the strongest voices for the commercials is pushing for their removal, it does seem to make the choice a little easier.

I don't see why not.

Yes, you can type additional stuff in the text section. It let me put a bunch about ending gillnetting in Washington.

I still say we don't have enough information. I'd like to know who'd replace these commissioners. Is there some way we can compel the Governor (maybe through FOIA), to let us know who he's considering for their replacement?

I didn't think Miranda Wecker was very good. Maybe I'm wrong. ???

Dear Sir/Madam,
Please provide the names and companies/organizations of any individuals being considered by the Governor, his staff, or other appointee, for those individuals’ possible future appointment to the Fish & Wildlife Commission. Thank you for your attention to my request.
Most Sincerely,
Pianoman

I respectfully challenge your response with an FOIA request.

The Wecker Wolf Plan is not working out so well.
-
Ms. Wecker is said to be a huge supporter of the current DFW Enforcement Management staff.
-
The Governor's office responded this AM already. Here is the list of names:
F&W APPLICANTS:
Jesse Thompson
Harvey Blankenship
Kenneth Raedeke
Gregory Mueller
Molly Bold
Larry Carpenter
Dennis Hunsinger
Victor Garcia
Arati Baruah
I have their applications, as well.

Seems like more than half are from the commercial fishing industry.

It appears that a good number are.
-
A good number are commercial, a couple environmentalist looking folks too. Really hard to say what their positions will be other than those from the commercial industry will very likely support the commercial industry.

Looks to me like Carpenter and Mueller are commercial fishing guys and Baruah calls herself "an environmental activist".

Carpenter is possibly the biggest recreational fishing supporter on the commission. Yes he does run a boat shop.

Commissioner Carpenter is a huge rec fishing (especially salmon) supporter. But he has stood by while DFW continues their ill-guided (IMO) efforts to restore land for salmon recovery. In the NW this has meant a loss of land bought and paid for by duck hunters and a loss of hunting opportunity. While I recognize the difficulty they face, I can't see how they can endorse a huge license fee increase proposal when hunters and fishers continue to lose opportunity. As for Ms. Wecker, I believe there are much better choices out there.
-
They have supported the increase (to a degree) because WDFW needs the money. At the same time, they have pushed for a shift in how the money is used and tried to get more of it used for things that benefit those that are paying.
The biggest benefit, that I see, is that they are not inclined to simply rubber stamp the BS from Inslee, the leg or the department staff. They've stood up regarding the commercial and tribal issues as best they can. Without someone to stand up, the commission will go back to being a rubber stamp. It would be a shame to lose them and they are threatened with replacement specifically because they don't toe the party line.

We need to protest.Instead of a March we all need to pull our boats to Olympia and express our disgust with the current situation.

This movement on the commercial side is a direct result of the feud between Oregon DFW and WA DFW where Oregon has gone back on their word to reduce commercial allocation on the Columbia to increase the recreational allocation.

To support Miranda Wecker is to support Cenci and the rest of the corrupt crew. Wecker absolutely should be gone. She is not a friend of WDFW enforcement officers, just of certain butt kissing pets of hers.

UC, do you know any of the candidates and if so, any you would recommend for the open spots?

Unfortunately, I do not. I just know that Wecker has to go

This should shed some light on Commissioner Wecker and Cenci (see attached).
-
I guess that explains why the commission has done nothing about Cenci.

The commission doesn't make personnel decisions. They could certainly put pressure on Unsworth and that doesn't appear to have been done.
A concern I have is let's say Wecker is booted, chances are her replacement will be from the commercial fishing industry simply because most of the applicants have that background. Cenci has a lot of friends in the commercial fishing industry, would anything really change? If anything we'd just see a good voice for recreational fishing disappear.

Are you telling me that Wecker's personal friendship has NO bearing on any decisions she might make toward removing Cenci? Especially given the fact that she is the chair person, I would think she would have a fair amount of influence.
What has she done that makes her a good voice for recreational fishing? :dunno:

The commission does make one huge personnel decision; they hire, supervise and fire the director at will. You must understand that if the commission wanted to fix the issues in enforcement, they would simply make sure the director got it done. The director may very well have his hands tied by Wecker and the commission, when it comes to enforcement, because of these special favors (ie- cleaning up the mess of a storm). That is exactly why that kind of behavior is considered to be a conflict of interest.

I count four: Thompson, Bold, Blankenship, and Mueller
Thompson, Blankenship, and Barauh can't be appointed if the current commission stays in-tact since you can't have more than one commissioner from a county and they live in a county who already has a WDFW Commissioner.
Let's not also forget anybody can take 10 minutes and apply to the Commission anyday. I'm actually surprised only 8 people have applied since you can apply 24/7/365.

I'm not saying that at all. She's friends with just about every WDFW Officer in Pacific County. I'm saying just because you boot Wecker from the commission, it doesn't mean another Cenci lover won't take her place, especially if Inslee appoints a person with commercial fishing interests.
She's not the Chair.
She was one of the biggest advocates for changing the allocation on the Columbia towards recreational fishing which has been the drama lately as well as the change in allocating more crab towards recreationals in Puget Sound away from the commercials.
