Title: Treso Nipple w/ #11 Cap Advice?
Post by: JL on February 13, 2017, 06:37:28 PM
CCI #11 and #11 Mag percussion caps fall off the Treso Ampcos nipples I'm running on a Black Diamond quite easily. I'd like to use the CCI #11 Mag P cap if possible, but obviously can't if this isn't solved. Any simple securing tips or should I just run a different brand/sz? Thanks!

I'd order a Knigh redhot. Much better nipple and caps fit snug.

try to dry fire it, to mushroom the nipple out a little, this may help hold them on. might even try a # 10 CCI makes them also. Squid

You are correct the NEW Treso AMPCO nipples are small - not only in the size of the nipple post but even the size of the flash hole.  The new AMPCO's are built for and to Re-enactment specifications.

I was thinking the Black Diamond used what TC called a 'flame thrower'  or something like that.  Or is that for Musket caps only?

Next part I can not remember what the face of the hammer looks like.  Is it a flat surface or does it actually have a cone or a pin in it for ignition of 209 primers.

The nipple MD recommended is not a bad nipple at all if you hammer is not flat faced, well in truth if it is flat faced that will work as well with the 'Red Hot"

But is you have a flat faced hammer a better choice might be available from Track of the Wolf.  TOW use to carry a AMPCO nipple that was perfect but AMPCO changed their dimensions so TOW contracted for a new SS steel nipple that was constructed as the AMPCO.

This picture shows the previous AMPCO nipple but I the text box it shows it shows the new order number for the Stainless Steel nipple.

When you use a capper to install the cap in the post, and install it tightly, the nipple becomes nearly impervious to water and the only way you are going to get the nipple off is to shoot it off or use a knife blade to peel it off.

Here is the link.  Read the information at the top of the page then scroll down the RST-S nipple

Thanks everyone. I like this particular nipple for the BD because it's single port and doesn't make as much of a mess as the flamethrowers they came with. They're dirty but nice shooters for the money. I've heard many people swear by the Ampco's steel w/ a CCI #11 which got me into this boat.

Really appreciate the help. Hoping to shoot some groups in this weekend.

Sorry I forgot to put the TOW link in my original reply..

Also now that I see your hammer - I now remember what I forgot... thanks for the pic.  That hammer will work well with the new TOW RST-S

Here is one installed in one of MK's

This nipple is very close in dimensions of the older AMPCO nipple.

The CCI caps fit the RST-S like a glove. Thanks again Sabot. Hoping to get some shooting/scouting in this weekend.

Very good... couple of suggestions - hopefully you are using a capper - push the cap on as tight as you can get it.  Then before you go on a shooting trip maybe go outside or in the garage and make sure that plunger spring is heavy enough to crush the cap down on the nipple to get ignition.

You will find the cap is really tight - tight enough that the convolutions on the cap are stretched tight on the nipple post.  you will actually get a near water proof seal at that point.  The important thing is - is your hammer spring strong enough to crush the cap.

Sabot, I was able to fire off exactly three 300 grain shockwaves on Saturday up in the Kaniksu. Conditions were terrible w/ sleet and rain. Managed to hike the 100 yds in 4 ft of snow, dropped the near-empty pack as a sort of modified unsupported position and reloaded between shots like a son of a gun. It went bang every time and I am on paper w/ the new peep. Group was real bad, but given the scenario, faded red front sight that blocked out the target, scope style target, no swabbing between shots, etc... I'm pretty confident the 6" group was me vs the loads. Running the 300 shockwaves w/ 110 of Tripple 7. Instant ignition w/ the RST-S and 11 Mag and stuff was wet!
