Title: Karen and Bruce's trapline
Post by: Humptulips on February 27, 2017, 11:25:23 PM
I could not get anyone to take the Brady trapping spot I posted earlier. Working with WDFW on this and hope it pays off with more lands open to trappers in the future.
So, I teamed up with our own Fatslinger and off we went to try and put a dent in some problem beaver.
First check the water was a little high and we had trouble with washed out sets but connected on an otter and nutria.

Second check was today and we finally did a little good. Three big beaver and another otter.
Whoa, that is one mean looking lady. >:( :chuckle: Ok to be fair it was blowing and very cold at the time.

More to come.

It was pretty cool and windy yesterday and I was tired from watching Bruce carry all those heavy beaver.

Lot of recent talk about the weights of beaver with the 100 pound post so It spurred me to weigh those three. 54, 44 and 38.

Third check, not so good. Caught one nutria. Maybe I can give it to Jesse.
Remember this old commercial.

With enough soy sauce or ketchup, anything is edible! :chuckle:
I have yet to ever catch one so I have no idea what they are even like but from the sound of it the smell alone is tough to overcome. I may wait til I'm a little more starving and there is no more cockroaches left before I try one!
Ironically, tonights dinner was spaghetti with beaver sausage meatballs. Freaking delicious!

So yesterday we only got 1 muskrat and several traps were sprung and empty. We are brainstorming to try and figure out why. Also had a confrontation with someone who was not happy we were there. We could see him from a distance and had a plan formulated in case of a physical fight (I was going to toss the rake to Bruce and hit the guy across the face with the muskrat, then Bruce would hit him with the rake). Luckily it didn't come to that but at least we were prepared.

I'm having a blast. Hopefully Bruce is too. He is doing all the work, except I carried our catch to the truck yesterday.

It really wasn't that confrontational with the guy but he was not happy we were there. He leases it for duck hunting. Landowners want the beavers gone so they can farm the fields rather then boat in them. Karen had the right idea and called the landowner. We let them argue it out.
Sprung traps has me scratching my head though. Possible beaver or nutria swim over traps and springing them so I turned the traps over so the trigger is on the bottom. Has me wondering though. 4 traps sprung, all within 20' of the county road and a number of cars watched me setting them and checking them. I'm wondering if we didn't have some help.
See what it looks like next time.
We really need to put in some scent sets on the bank but I don't want to make the trip to check them every day.

A little bit better luck today with three beavers. Had one trap sprung that I think a beaver crawled over instead of diving through it. Moved a few traps around and put some scent sets in. Really tough to find a place for a swim through. The one place is like a flooded forest. The beaver can cut and eat to their hearts content all the while staying in 6'+ of water.
I did not want to go to scent sets because they are not drowning sets and I did not want to have to visit the site every day but looks like we are going to have to check every day now. Kind of out of options.
No pictures, having a tough time posting pictures of late.

Another big one today. I'll estimate high 40s. No pictures, still a problem for me.
Scent sets did not produce but one of my swim through sets came through. Lot of goose hunters down there today, last day I think.

Nice catch     another one bits the dust / water

Stay away from those goose hunters.   :hunt2:
If they have their dogs with them they will go crazy if they know you have traps out there even if there cage traps.
