Title: plinking bullet for 38 spl
Post by: gadwall on March 13, 2017, 06:47:40 AM
looking for a recommendation for a good all around plinker to load in a compact 38 SPL.  I like cast but jacketed OK too.  Mostly for my wife and daughter to shoot so wanting to go with as light a load/bullet as possible that will shoot good

Thanks.

Get some 148 grain double ended wadcutters.  Personally for plinkers I would use rainier plated bullets, and a couple grains of red dot.

I've used 125 gr bullets in a 38spl and about 3 grains of titegroup.  Very mild load that is pleasant to shoot.  I use xtremebullets for most of my bulk pistol plinking ammo.  I've been very happy with them.

I'm just getting into reloading again and have been loading up five bullets starting at the low end on up to the max load. I have a bunch of pistol powder so I'll see what works best in each of my hand guns.
I did buy a pistol rest to test these rounds out. I'm looking for accurate loads with low recoil. I'll be testing 110 grain Hornady XTP, 148 grain double ended wad cutters, 158 grain XTP, 160 grain FMJ, & 180 grain XTP.

This will take some time to get , but it will be fun doing it.
I think the first gun I'll run this with will be a older 7&1/2", 357magnum Ruger Redhawk. The next gun will be a 6" stainless Ruger GP100.

I've been waiting for a nice dry day with warmer weather. Until then I'll load up more bullets.
