I drew Monroe after 5 years of putting in
I have experience in the unit a few years back my father in law shot a nice boar.
Was just wondering if I'm the only one on the forum who drew this unit.
-
Your father inlaw must be a great hunter and shot the only bear in the Monroe unit :chuckle:
-
Lol he's pretty good when he puts his mind to it he's taught me 90% of what I know and got me into hunting so I guess all around he's pretty great but you knew that already. As for only bear I sure as hell hope not but I'll do my best to put that comment to rest :chuckle:
-
yah he's pretty good I guess LOL. Good luck with your tag, I'm sure I'll be getting daily updates from Steve.
-
Do you know much about the area?
-
Do you know much about the area?
Because D-Rock won't be able to help you if you dont...
-
My hunting partner and I also got Monroe.
-
Yeah jbar you probably will lol and thanks
Drock I know my fair share but always down for some more company and learn some new spots and willing to hike my a$$ off
-
Crosshair congrats I thought I was the only one lol
If you ever wanna go out together I'm down for company or willing to help in any way
-
If you need I live up here and if you need some help with the area let me know
Jake
-
Sharp shooter I am sure we can work something out, it wouldn't hurt to lean on D-Rock a bit either... I have been following this forum for a long time and I know he knows his bear hunting and great knowledge of the area.
-
Thank you much jakeland
Sounds good crosshair and Ill defiantly invite drock out I been following this forum for many years too and he seems to know his stuff so once I get the keys and maps I'll defiantly give him a shout
-
Sharp...if you poke around you can find my 2013 bear thread, drew monroe and killed a nice bear. Drock and Stang know the area well, so does Jake. Good luck on the tag.
-
Not drawn, good luck to those who drew. I know nothing about this hunt but applied because it is close
-
Thanks stickerbrush
H20 I remember your bear thread like it was yesterday was a great hunt to follow
On a side note anyone know when I get my maps and have to go pick my key up
-
Thanks stickerbrush

I believe we will have a meeting with WDFW and we should get all of the information at that point.
-
:yeah:
-
But do you guys no when I'm working later in the days and don't wanna miss it so I would need to plan for it
-
Nope, was held on a sat am when i drew.
-
Get a couple of spare tires...
I would advise against putting "boots on the ground". There's lots of roads, I've always had best luck driving. Concentrate later in the season, not earlier. Use the earlier season to explore areas and learn places you want to go back to later. Ping D-rock if you need help (lol).
I'm 2/2 in the Monroe Spring bear hunt. I even passed on one the last time I drew.
Good luck, you should get one. Plan on spending more than just a weekend up there though.
-
Ok sat morning I would be able to go
You guys are already a ton of help thanks guys
Thang I have no problem burning boot leather I was gonna spend early part scouting out spots I like beating brush then end of May start hitting it hard
I plan on spending every morning out there. Any one who knows me know I hunt my ass off. Huntings my biggest passion and that's what I spend all my time away from work doing. I plan on "ping" drock stand and whoever else would like to ride shotgun and help out when out in the field.
You guys are a ton of help for this young lad and I thank you guys a ton
-
Going for a walk tomorrow, will report any bear sign we see.
-
Good Luck and post pictures,
-
So, nothing major to report for you monroe tag holders. Covered a bit over 4 miles, lots of fresh grass coming in, buds on trees, looks good out there. No bear sign but looks good overall.
-
Thank you for the update h2o
I'll be taking a long walk tomorrow also not hoping for much but I'll bring the camera anyway. What road did you walk h20 any of them that I'll be able to hunt?
-
A gravel gated road :chuckle:. Yep, in your unit, all huntable.
-
This is a dandy spot..... :chuckle:
-
That does look like a good spot
Do any of you guys not work tomorrow and down for a nice hike
-
I know exactly where H20 and Drock hunt. For a nice finder fee I can give you a detailed map of both of their favorite spots. Now if Drock and H20 want me to stay quiet, they will need to pay a bigger fee. Let the info auction begin. Can I get $500, $500, going once........................... :chuckle:
-
:o $500 man ripper my pockets aren't that deep I'll just feed one of you guys a couple IPA's. You will be talking in no time :chuckle:
-
You had me at IPA.
-
I'll show you both spots where stang killed his bears because I'm just a nice guy.
-
H20 it's all I drink unless I want some water then I'll grab a coors
Dang d-rock that's an awful nice offer I'm gonna have to buy more beer lol
-
I'll show you both spots where stang killed his bears because I'm just a nice guy.
Huh...

Im always up for a hike sharp shooter. I drew Monroe unit with crosshair. :IBCOOL:
-
Ok right on trevor congrats
What's your days off I don't start work till 3:30pm so most mornings you will find me in the woods now that I have a tag in hand
-
crosshairs and I both have weekends off. He is itching to get out there as bad as I am. We will figure a time to go out soon that works for all of us.
-
I even know where that spot is that H2O posted! However, my sense of direction is terrible and I could never direct anyone there...
-
This is a dandy spot..... :chuckle:
But there is already someone there. :dunno:
:chuckle:
-
Trevor sounds good to me I have sundays and a week day off so it would have to be a Sunday
Dave I'm sure I could find it with a little help from google maps and a little driving maybe I'll get lucky
-
This is a dandy spot..... :chuckle:
Is the para-cord still there ?
-
Can't believe C-Post is out of the bag. One of the richest bear areas in the state.
-
:ban:
-
Gotta be careful of pics :dunno:
-
So I just got my vortex scope back that goes on my tikka 7mm that I sent back last week and it's worse off than when I sent it in. The crosshairs are all over the place :bash:
I'm not happy I know I have plenty of time and back ups but that's my go to
Bear killer
Now I have to pay to send it back and wait again to get it back this kinda sucks
-
One brother drew Monroe, the other Skagit...here I am left with tag soup.
-
Wow that sucks
I hope the brother for Monroe puts in the time and gets one if he doesn't and the skagit brother does he will never here the end of how the skagit unit is better
-
Monroe will always be better...
-
I think so too
Has anyone got there packets yet im waiting on it still
-
it came in the mail last night! Meeting is April 8th at 1:00!
-
Monroe will always be better...

I honestly love the Monroe hunt, because I'm good at it.
Can I come drink beer and ride-along with someone? I'll show you all the spots...
-
Damn I was hoping to make it to the meeting but it's to late in the day for me I start work at 3:30.
Stang your more than welcom to come along with me showing me spots is optional.
I love the Monroe unit because everyone hates it because it's to hard to hunt.
Well that's how you become a better hunter is hunting the hard stuff.
-
Shotgun! Stang is a wee lad, barely bigger than Drock who frankly is elflike....they can ride in the back.
-
I don't think either are easy. Gotta put your time in. It'd be hard to be an out of Towner and only hunt a few days in these 2 hunts and be successful. I think it's easier to do the east side hunts if you only have a few days.
-
Thank goodness I'm not an out of Towner I love 15-20 from the gate and will spend every ounce of free time chasing my favorite animal to hunt.
-
Lots of bears up around the Kellogg lake area. Saw a huge one up wallace lake.
-
Lots of clear cuts up there also
-
I haven't got my maps yet but are those areas open for spring bear?
-
I haven't got my maps yet but are those areas open for spring bear?
no, u stay outta there
:nono:
-
Monroe will always be better...
X2
Don't be fooled by X-force. We all know there are no bears in Monroe or Skagit. They have all moved to the east side.
-
Just a heads up for the last couple posts there's a sow with 2 cubs with her in there so just make sure you take a good long look before pulling the trigger and good luck everyone! Just saw her on Sunday night
-
Good to know thank you jake
-
Hit the high swamps ! Seeing fresh track in there ! They are munching on the skunk cabbage popping up
-
Thank you again jake
-
Walked my 4 mile loop with the fam today...no clear sign. Didn't see any peels or grass nibblage....granted, walking with the fam we dont get off the gravel. However , looking good overall. Lots of green up and budding.
-
I've got about the same so far h20
No poop grass niblig track or tree peeling
But there is a ton of green coming out just from today's heat. I think we will start seeing bears within the next 2 weeks. I am excited any how
-
Well it happened
-
Well it happened
I went through 2 tires last time I had this tag. One tire the time before.
-
Yeah thank god I had a spare and jack
And I got it to flat ground
-
Glad to see you got out of there ok. I am hoping to get out with the camera here in a few days.
-
Yeah I was back up and going in about 15 minutes
Me and my buddy were Joking I wonder what a city boy would do if this was them want to go bear hunting get drawn fist time putting in then get a flat with no cell service.
God I'd pay to see that laugh then help them out
-
Post some pics up if you get any saylean
-
I had a pretty fun story.
First flat, no service, jack slipped and broke. I pounded it back together on a rock (can't believe it worked) and it kind of haphazardly functioned. I got the truck up a little bit and then decided it was risky to go up further, so we dug down under the slightly raised tire to clear enough room below it to put the spare on. Digging down on a shale logging road, in the rain, using rocks, is about the worst thing ever. Finally got that tire changed and drove home carefully.
The next one I had a floor jack and 2 spares in the back (and still hadnt fixed the original tire because it was the next day, so I was still running on my first spare). When I got my second flat, I had the car jacked up before the air had fully left the tire. My 2 spares were also GM 6 lugs, but it turns out they were a different diameter pattern. Yes, I'm an idiot. Then Dinker came up to save me with his spare on his older GM truck. He has 16" rim spare, I have 17" rims. The bolt pattern is identical. Turns out, my Z71 stupid brakes take up all of that 17" diameter volume and his spare didn't fit. Being enterprising lads, we turned the steelie tire around and put it on backwards so that the rim didn't have to envelop the brakes. We drove out of there real slow with an inside out tire and about 35mph the whole way home. What a trainwreck. I went from thinking I was overly prepared to being hosed twice. At least I had cell service (barely) the second time.
I get the discount tire warranty and was very pleased to be able to use it twice within the first year of getting my tires. Makes me feel like I got my money's worth.
-
I was 20 miles up Rock Creek Road outside of Missoula one summer on a solo fly fishing trip. I got a flat, changed it, drove about another mile, and got another. There is NOTHING on that road for miles and miles. Luckily, a guy and his wife came by. I had a plug kit, and they had a compressor that plugs into the lighter socket. We made it work and I got back to Missoula. For about an hour I was wondering if I would have to walk a good 10 miles to find someone. I now travel with a fully loaded tire repair kit and a compressor of my own.
-
:dunno:
Cmon people....where is the Monroe hunters and some trophy pics?
-
It's not looking to good as of this weekend. I am sure there are some around but not where I have been. We have walked some good roads and no sign at all up to this point.
-
Ready to call on some people with knowledge!!!!
-
I heard a rumor that the spring hunters can only hunt the state land this year. Is that true, or can you hunt tree farm still?
-
:dunno:
Cmon people....where is the Monroe hunters and some trophy pics?
Seriously. Ran across a ton of piles in a new area this weekend. Getting itchy for Aug. 1.
-
I hope you guys make good on the Monroe tags. I spoke with a GW this last weekend and he mentioned this will be the last year for the Monroe spring bear tags. Make it count this year!
-
Sorry come again? >:(
-
He mentioned the Monroe spring bear hunt was setup to be a damage control hunt and a study showed the spring bear hunt did not help with damage control and actually had an adverse effect by having hunters scare bears into towns. He mentioned two active bear incidents in towns close to the unit involving two different bears. He mentioned more details that I can type out later. I sent an email out to WDFW to see if I can get more info on this. I will share the response when I get one.
-
Ehhhh sounds a little far fetched to me :dunno: so many hunters that the bear are getting driven out of the woods and into town ??? At this time of year there are more day hikers with kids and dogs then hunters in the woods .
-
Overall bear population would have significantly more impact on moving bears into town than hunting pressure. :twocents:
-
I did find in interesting (disturbing maybe) that Spring Bear 2018 was left out of the new regs.
I sure hope you're just blowing smoke jk......
-
I certainly wouldn't trust that JKThomps guy. :chuckle:
-
Not blowing smoke... just thought I would let you guys know what the game warden said.
It wasn't just the number of hunters forcing bears into populated areas, there was a lot more to the study of the specific unit and the damage control did not do what it was intended to do.
Like I said, will post the response I get back from WDFW. Heck, maybe they will get rid of the draw all together and make it OTC spring bear. :dunno:
-

:chuckle: We are going to have so much fun in Montana
-
Oh, the GW did have a Karelian Bear Dog with him. Pretty amazing what these dogs can do. Just thought I would toss that out there
-
This is from the current regs (page 68), so there are changes coming.
NEW! 2018 Spring Black Bear Special Permit Hunts will be announced November 2017.
Please check the WDFW web page at http://wdfw.wa.gov/ for the hunt area announcement.
Additionally, information will be provided to all vendors and licensed hunters.
WDFW is changing the timing for determining spring bear hunt areas and permit numbers. This will improve
alignment of management needs where it is most needed. Spring bear seasons are typically used to address
specific management needs, such as tree damage on industrial managed timberlands, nuisance and damage, or
to better distribute harvest. Bear seasons are assessed using trends in the percent female bears in the harvest, the
median age of harvested males and females, and total harvest.
Note: The Department will present any proposed changes to hunt areas, dates and
permits during the August Commission meeting.

:yeah:
There is relatively low damage in the area. In addition to that there has been very low harvest rates.
-
I just got off the phone with WDFW and DNR. WDFW advised me that the Monroe draw is controlled by DNR. I was transferred to DNR's Recreation/Conservation department and left a message for a call back. I will post back what the DNR has to say about it. :bash:
-
 thx for the legwork.
-
 thx for the legwork.
No problem. Unfortunately, I could not get a solid yes or no, but below is what I could dig up.
DNR conversation summary:
DNR does not manage the actual hunt, they manage the land/timber areas, and the DNR will make recommendations to WDFW if they need bears removed in the spring (damage control). The private land owners also make recommendations to WDFW if they need bear control to happen. The larger land owners (i.e. Tacoma Power), manage their own lands and will ask WDFW to open certain areas up for spring bear damage control. WDFW conducts studies in the area and determine how many tags each unit should receive based off of the damage, the number of bears, and the number of bears taken in the past (if/when it is/was open).
WDFW usually sets seasons in 3 year increments. 2017 is the end of the seasons that were set for the past three years (2015, 2016, 2017), and 2018 is the start of the next three years (2018, 2019, 2020). It is very possible that the Monroe spring bear hunt will be closed because the past three seasons did not prove to assist with the damage control, and the number of bears harvested during the spring season, in the Monroe unit, is relatively low on a percentage basis.
However, at this time, the season is not 100% determined to be closed. There will be opportunities for the public to make recommendations during the 2018-2020 hunting season setting process.
I was then referred to the following information on the WDFW website. http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/regulations/seasonsetting/
2018-2020 Hunting Season Setting Process
As outlined in the timeline below, there will be several opportunities for you to provide your input throughout the process. Your first opportunity to participate will be in late-June. The Department has asked for your help identifying the major issues that are important to you for the next three-year hunting season cycle.
Watch this website for regular updates on the season-setting process! We will also be communicating via email throughout this process to hunters that have purchased a license within the last couple of years. If you have not recently purchased a hunting license, but would like to receive email notifications of news and upcoming events we encourage you to subscribe to our e-mail distribution lists.
Season Setting Timeline:
Regions Submit 3-Year Hunting Season Setting Ideas: May – June 2017
WDFW Regions submit 2018-2020 three-year Hunting Season Setting ideas. Regional ideas will be incorporated with ideas received from the public since the last 3-year hunting season setting process. The public will have an opportunity to submit new ideas through the public survey in mid-July through August.
Formulate Recommendations and Alternatives: July – August 2017
Members of the public will have an opportunity to give comment that would help shape the 2018-2020 hunting seasons at a series of public "open house" meetings planned by the WDFW in July and August. Public can also provide comment online from July 14 2017 through August 31,2017. Public comments received at the meetings and through the survey will help the Department understand the level of support for the proposed hunting regulations for 2018-20. The Department wants to hear people's concerns, especially those that address a significant conservation or management issue.
Public Comment Period: July 14, 2017 – August 31, 2017
Public Meetings will be held from 7-9 p.m. (sign in begins at 6:30 p.m.) at the following locations:
Date City Address
July 25 Spokane Valley Center Place Regional Events Center, Conference Room 110, 2426 N Discovery Place, Spokane Valley, WA 99216
July 26 Wenatchee Wenatchee Convention Center, Fuji Rooms (lower level), 121 N. Wenatchee Avenue, Wenatchee, WA 98801
July 27 Yakima Fair Bridge Inn, Suites & Conference Center, 1507 N. 1st Street, Yakima, WA 98901
Aug 1 Everett Lynnwood Convention Center, 3711 196th Street SW, Lynnwood, WA 98036
Aug 2 Olympia Red Lion Hotel, 2300 Evergreen Park Drive, Olympia, WA 98502
Aug 3 Vancouver Heathman Lodge, Howard/Marshall Conference Room, 7801 NE Greenwood Dr., Vancouver WA 98662
Following public comment, Department staff will develop recommendations for consideration by the Fish and Wildlife Commission in March and adoption in April 2018. These recommendations will be based on the biological needs of a species and the social need of the public gathered through the comment period.
I called WDFW back and confirmed that the information I received from DNR is accurate. So, it is WDFW that manages the actual hunt and number of tags and seasons, and it is DNR and private land owners that ask for the spring seasons to be open.
What I got out of this is there is a possibility that the spring bear season will end in the Monroe unit, and there is a possibility it will not. After the conversation I had the GW, the studies that have been conducted, discussions with DNR and WDFW, and the end of the 2015 – 2017 set seasons I would not be surprised if it is closed. I recommend hunters voice their opinions at these meetings.
-
WOW Jimmy, I didn't know you had that in you!
Great summary and thanks for following up!

:yeah: Nice of you to dig deeper into this, looks like the smoke has cleared.
It sure would be a shame if this hunt goes away though...
-
Come on guys we are seriously slack on getting bears on the ground! the Skagit boys are making us look bad.
-
Saw a sow and cub yesterday between Granite Falls and Lake Rosiger. Hoping to see some bears down soon. Give me hope for fall :IBCOOL:
-
Haven't been on in a while
I'm 3 tires deep now
The sign is starting to show up and there out and about I passed on my first bear this morning had milk on its lips
-
What's going on with the Monroe tag holders ?
-
It's been three years since I had the tag but if any tag holders need a spot to check out hit me up! Text me best. 425 346 9941.
-
I have now seen 7 bears. Passed on the first one I saw it was way to small. Then a handful I never had a chance at. Two weeks ago I shot at a bruiser but missed judge the yardage by a ways....... :bash:. Then last week had another chance at a good bear and my rifle jammed. So that is how my Monroe spring bear tag has gone. I have been doomed to only coming close to shooting bears but not able to connect with them. That being said I have spent almost every day in the woods since may. With a few days missed here and there.
