Title: Back Country hunting
Post by: TawkinTurkey on April 04, 2017, 03:47:30 PM
Hey guys, I am fairly new to the sport and very new to this site. I am not asking for anybody's spots or anything, and please stop me if this is a stupid question,  but Are there any areas in Washington where it would be possible to get like 5 to 20 miles from a road that's open to hunting.. I like hiking and camping and would love to be able to get away from some of the crowds and I know a lot of hunters wouldn't hike that. I hunt turkey mainly but would like to get into deer and elk.

If your in Pullman then the Wenaha Tucannon wilderness south of you would probably be closest. Spike only hunting for elk unless you draw a tag. I haven't seen a lot of deer in there but I have seen a few good ones. Few bears also. Not a lot of human traffic in there compared to a lot of the other wilderness areas. That's where I would start if I was you.

Pasayten Wilderness in the North Cascades. And if you go there just please get all the way into the wilderness area if you'r hunting the high buck hunts. Doesn't sound like that will be a problem for you, but tons of hunters do the high buck hunt in areas that aren't even in the wilderness area---and the wardens won't do anything about it!

So your not necessarily talking the high hunt but hunting in the back country correct. If so there is lots of public ground out there with a little boots on the ground.
