Well my dad and I got lucky and drew new mexico elk muzzy tags. So my question is what is the effective range you guys think the disc extreme can shoot and kill an elk at with a scope mounted? I'm very new to the muzzy scene and was considering buying the remington ultimate but would prefer not to. Thanks

This is gonna be another "IT DEPENDS ON THE SHOOTER AND THE ENVIRONMENT" thread.

My limiter with m/l has always been my arruracy with iron sights.
At my best I felt confident to 150 yards. Shot one of my two good bulls at 112 and the wound channel was still very impressive so it still comes down to how far can I confidently drill the vitals. For me.
Good luck in NM!!!!

I think with optical sights you're likely to run out of enough energy to cleanly kill an elk before running out of accuracy potential. Even sabot projectiles have very low ballistic coefficients.

:yeah: I agree less than half the B/C of most 30 cal bullets.I would (but this is just me) would want to close the gap to at least 250 yards before i took a shot. :twocents:

Go with a heavy bullet and a maximum charge of powder and I think you'd be good to 200 yards.

I was thinking 200 yards was a good number.

The DISC can not extend the range to match the RUM you have listed - but 200 yards is a pretty easy option with a heavy bullet. I feel really confident with a scope and 300 grain bullet to get the job done at 250 yards - even using low BC open nose bullets.

One of the biggest factors in extend a ML range is 'mother nature' and her effect on the bullet as it travels across the terrain.

Dang it, you posted before I could SL. I was going to say practice up and see how far out there you feel confident. My guess would be 200 should be pretty easy and you might make it to 250. Then I was going to throw in an @Sabotloader to get his attention and have him give input on this. Way to be on top of it man.

Then have a friend go out in the field where it is safe and place some vital size targets at random distances and see how you do. Even with a good rangefinder it will not be like sitting at a bench and shooting. You will soon learn what your capabilities are.

Thanks for the input so far, I was thinking 200-300 would probably be max, so how far would the RUM be good too? My dads most likely gonna buy that one, then I'll use it if I have too 😁

I wouldn't plan on shooting past 250 yards for an elk, and would only do that after confirming my gun, load, and capabilities were up to placing a shot into the kill zone of an elk nearly every time at that distance. :twocents:

Would buying the 209 conversion kit benefit me in anyway? I'll be in New Mexico so I'm not too worried about weather.

The gun is capable of 300yard shots with a scope and good weather conditions at the range. The problem is the lack of downrange energy just as everyone is pointing out..
