My wife has decided she would
Like to try hunting, she is disabled and definitely on the petite side, thusly needs a very light rifle. I have an encore frame that I was thinking a .308 barrel would maybe work nicely or a ruger American compact in .308. Opinions?

I'd like to keep this a factory ammo rifle

stick a .243 barrel on the ruger compact unless she wants to hunt elk then the 7mm-08 or .308.
-
Thought you where selling a 243 ,why don't you use that. :dunno:
way to heavy for her.

elk are on the menu

A Tikka youth .243 would be ideal.
Light, accurate and a great trigger.
Easy decision.

Savage lady hunter if it is not to heavy is a great gun. Ruger compacts are light weight and good shooters to....just not my ball of wax.
Good luck, having the ladies hunting is always a great thing.

Get a 16" .308 or 7mm-08 standard rifle contour Encore barrel. You already have the frame and the stock. You might have to get a barrel cut down and re-crowned, but that would be a sweet little rig.

7mm-08 is plenty for elk, and a good flat shooting rifle.
My caution is that when it's in a light, short barreled configuration the recoil and noise can defeat the goal.
My wife has a weatherby vanguard compact in 7mm-08 with a youth stock. It's an awesome compact handy rifle, and everything she's shot with it has been DRT. But the recoil and noise is comparable to a larger calibered longer barreled rifle.
If you chose a 308 or 7mm-08 in a youth configuration start with light loads and double plug. Both of these can help with avoiding flinching and recoil sensitivity.

That's ok. I don't think he'd really need to go that short anyway. My Encore with a 26" heavy barrel and a 4-16 scope on it weighs around 9# all up. A 20" pencil barrel and a modest sized scope on it would be light enough. I bet you could get it set up around 7.5 pounds, which is light but not crazy light. If recoil is a concern, put a brake on it...but then you have the noise issue I guess.

If she's never shot, i'd get a .243. She has to learn good shooting habbits. When that is childsplay, move up if elk is a regular option. That said, a .243 will kill em dead at reasonable ranges. Which they all will be for a new hunter.

I've been looking at the CVA Hunter Compact in 243 for my daughter. It's only 5.5 pounds, 13 inch length of pull, and a 20 inch barrel. It's also available in 7/08. Cabelas has them for $199. Seems like the perfect size rifle for a small person and you can't beat the price.

We have 2 .243's in the house. We have killed about a dozen or so deer with them at ranges from point blank to 300 yards or so. I am a firm believer in the .243 but I don't think it's an elk cartridge.

Tikka compact in 7mm08, low recoil, deadly. comes with a stock spacer so a full size shooter can use it too.

I would go with a 7mm-08.

I see your in selah.....maybe someone in the area can meet you and your wife at the range and let her try out a rifle?? If you are ever in the Wenatchee area look me up. Your wife is welcome to shoot my wife and daughters Savage Lady hunters in .243 and 7mm-08. I also have a light weight mountain rifle in .308 with a break if she wants to try that.....but the price of those mountain rifles can be pricey.

I may take you up in that!
