So... Today for lunch, had to scrounge up whatever was in the cupboard, found a can of bumblebee brand sardines in hotsauce.... Along with some other items, but, the sardines got me thinking
Normally I turn my nose up at sardines, as, they tend to be rather lackluster. To be fair, one of the best cans of fish I've ever had were a high end import of sardines from Italy, in a very nice olive oil, filleted, no bones, no skin, those were like candy...
To be fair to the sardine, it is on my bucket list to try them fresh in some Italian or Spanish dish, but for now, they will be eaten ala can.
But... What can be done to the standard American grocerystore brand of sardines to make them more palatable?
I went for a lil mayo and mustard on Ritz crackers, weren't the best....weren't the worst either... But got me thinking... How do the hunt wa guys handle the classic can of sardines?

Make sardines more palatable? I say put them on a hook and try to catch an edible fish. :chuckle: Sorry, I guess I'm just not a sardine fan.

I like canned in oil over water and I find the canned in hot sauce terrible, if you like hot sauce add it when you eat it. I also split them and pull the spine out. Its not my go to, but its edible.

My dad being a full blooded Swede loved lutefisk, pickled herring, smoked smelt etc. I liked the occasional smoked smelt but never really developed a taste for that stuff. In my opinion about the best you can hope for with sardines is not bad, and think biggfish is on the right track to get to not bad.

I dig canned fish, I often eat it while traveling as it is simple, tasty and healthy. The upper end ones can be real tasty as well as the retort salmon and tuna packs.
If you don't like sardines or herring they probably aren't that great.

When I was in Italy Spain Croatia I ate fresh grilled sardines brushed with a bit of olive oil
Delicious!
Costco has good sardines packed in olive oil or can get on Amazon
I drain oil take out and grill a few minutes on high heat
Taste is pretty good

I haven't had sardines in a long time, but I do like them. I'll never forget the day I took a sardine sandwich to school in the 2nd grade. Everybody freaked out. I guess it's an acquired taste.

I love canned sardines in water or oil but can't stand any of the flavored.
About the only way I eat them is on a saltine with a
Dash of yellow mustard

I grew up on pickled herring (had cod potatoes and herring for dinner), but surstromming is a line I won't cross

Take a can of that up fishing with you! Open it up at breakfast when everyone is a little haggard. Might get your arse beat but it'd be worth it!

Tiny Tots brisling sardines in extra virgin olive oil. Other types are hugh with only 1 fish in the can a lot of the time.Winco has them for $2.50 or cheaper.I like to mix them with thin sliced sweet onion & sour cream on crackers or Stacy chips.

When we were kids we would just eat them out of the can. Tried some about a month ago and don't know what i liked about them as a youngster.

Second the quality of Costco sardines. Slap em on some good grain filled bread, grainy mustard and enjoy!

I am a fan of eating bait, and although I preferred kippered and pickled herring, sardines are pretty tasty with some stone ground wheat crackers, a little yellow mustard, and cheese and a pickle on the side.
I think I will have some for lunch.

I have carried sardines in my pack on a hunt, and then eat them with crackers for my lunch. I like the ones with mustard. They taste mighty good at the top of the hill as an alternative to trail mix, jerky, etc.

Most of the time I eat sardines with something besides just crackers. Some kind of patte with the crackers.
I love pickled herring and will have to try the surstromming. I almost think that these fish are best with something else pickled to balance the flavor. Sweet and sour kind of thing. If I remember right IKEA has some pickled herring with sweet onion that makes a great combo.

Scrounged up a can of sardines thus week as well. Crackers and lunch was served. I really like the mustard ones.

I like this too.
What I don't like is having the oily can in my pack after the fact.
Make sure you take a zip-lock bag to put the can in.

Sardines are good on a cracker and in my youth my dad and I would put horseradish on top. Like it!

There is always a bunch of cans of sardines in my camp. I love them. In water though only. The ones in oil are a bit much for me. The best sardines, maybe one of the best things I've ever eaten, was at a Spanish Tapas bar in Copenhagen. They were small, whole, slightly battered and fried. Absolutely delicious.
