Title: South Sound Lake Fishing - Any recommendations?
Post by: Practical Approach on May 15, 2017, 01:00:57 PM
I am looking to go fishing this weekend with my oldest son who is 4.  Looking for someplace to go where he has a chance to catch some fish. I mainly fish the sound and ocean, but want something low key that he will enjoy.   I have a 20ft boat that I would like to use.  I expect there will be little to no trolling, mainly fishing under a bobber.  Thanks for any advice in advance.

Anywhere within a hour or so from Olympia area.

I took a swarm of little ones fishing over at Lake Isabella, near Shelton.  Just go down by the boat launch and line them up, they will catch trout if they can keep their bait wet!

Good tip.  However, I think with my son, the boat ride is half the fun.

give Summit lake a shot off of HWY 8..  About 25 mins from DT Olympia.  Koks, trout and bass.  Decent sized lake and nice launch.

Do not give Summit Lake a shot.  They are dealing with a toxic algae bloom.   :yike:

Ok, will stay away form Summit lake for a while then.  How about Offut, Pattison, Long Lake or St. Clair?

the news said that boiling still didn't make it safe.   :yike:  You're not even supposed to wash in it!  It's a big deal because that is the residents drinking water.

Lawrence lake is good, nice launch to. Offutt lake is good but launch sucks. St Clair is one of  my favorites, great ramp. MacIntosh is full of weeds. Clear Lake on Bald Hills Road is good.

A little late, but if you have a boat available, even a canoe, Lake St. Claire is my favorite and the only one I'll eat trout from in the south sound area.  Some of the trout get really good color and flavor (if it's pale, toss it back IMO) as I think there are freshwater "shrimp" in there.  As a side note, there are also freshwater sponges on some of the sticks if you pull any in.  Also, if you like spiny rays, this lake has decent bass, bluegill, perch, and rock bass in it.  It is fun fishing with a bobber and worm, you never know what you will pull in. The first time I fished it, I dropped a crawler down through some tree branches and pulled up a 23" rainbow that was as red as a sockeye when I fileted it.

Fished em all over the years.  St Claire is the best.  Mcintosh worst-warm n weeds.  Offut and Clear are pretty good.  Pattison can be too.  All stockers and too warm, that's why I like Deep Claire.  Harts lake is a fun one too-Cats!!  One up by Matlock can be good as well.

Well thanks for all of the advice.  I ended up going to Black Lake.  Caught lots of decent rainbow trout mainly for fun.  I wanted to go to St. Clair but the launch and parking looked too small for the size boat I had.  My son had fun which was the main reason we went anyway.  Anyone fish Mayfield or some of the southwest WA larger lakes?
