Title: The 270 AR project
Post by: yorketransport on May 15, 2017, 10:33:26 PM
I haven't really done any updates on this project for a while but I've finally settled in on a couple different loads. The rifle is a Mega side charge billet upper and lower with an 18" ARP barrel in 270 AR. It was professionally assembled by the one and only Gunsmith X, aka Dirk McFiddlesticks.

The 270 AR is a shortened 6.5 Creedmoor or 6.5x47 Lapua case (or any other 308 based case) that offers about 200 fps more velocity than the 6.8 SPC from the same length barrel. Here's a 223, 270 AR with a 117 Hammer Hunter, 6.5 Grendel,  270 AR with a 135 SMK, and a 6.5x47 Lapua

For now I've settled on the 135 Sierra MK at 2635 fps for a target load and I'm working up a load with the 117 Hammer Hunter as a hunting bullet. The 135 SMK holds .5-.6 MOA and the 117 Hammer Hunter shoots just as well at 2735 fps with a relatively mild charge. I'll probably run the velocity up a bit on the 117gr bullet to see if the groups hold. I think I'm slowly coming around to ARs as long as they're not in 223/5.56. :chuckle:

No way! Dirk himself has fondled that firearm?

I don't normally like to name drop, but McFiddlesticks and I have worked on a couple of projects together now. He's kind of a big deal. :chuckle:

A true man of mystery. Behind the firing line rumors and murmurs have it that McFiddlesticks doesn't even have finger prints where his finger prints are supposed to be! How is that possible? That's like Bigfoot with no feet.😯

Good to know.  One thing is for sure I know Dirk's cousin Booger-finger McFiddlesticks, definitely has fingerprints.  I always find them on my guns when I take them out of the safe.  I'm still not sure how he does it.  He also finds a way to turn an elevation turret precisely one rotation off, while no one is looking.

You may be able to get one from ARP, but they're hit and miss. Since it uses the ARP "super bolt" and barrel extension they can't be built out of readily available parts. It's the same bolt and extension that were used on the 6.5 BRX barrels (I have one of those too) but they aren't really available any more. I will say that this 270 is significantly more forgiving to work with than the 6.5 BRX was. I got tired of the kind of unpredictable groups I'd get from the BRX, and that's how I ended up with the 270.
