So looking in 2018 to come back to my home state to hunt some beautiful Roosevelt bull elk. I know hoof rot has taking a toll on them it looks like. But I was just wondering how herds are doing besides the fact that's going in. I know alot can change in a year. But anybody from the East side of Lewis County on this forum?? Grew up in Morton. I hunted a ton in the south Rainier unit. Just wondering if I'd be better hunting Elk or deer thanks.

If your familiar with the SR unit IMO it would be a safe bet to return and check it out. Overall it has been less impacted than many other areas on the westside.

I live near Mayfield Lake if that's counts as East Lewis Co. I don't hunt S. Rainier so can't help you there. On timberlands and state lands I've been seeing tons of elk in the usual places and many herds with over 50% or more limping. It's been just making me sick. High country bulls out in the GPNF seem to be slightly fewer than I usually see but it's early for me yet. I have yet to see elk out that way limping myself or on my cams.

Thanks guys. Sounds like I'll be returning. An non res tags went down $100. Under $500 now. I know 2 or so years ago tags were almost $600.

I know obviously it's your home state, but if I were you i would just go to Idaho... specially if your going to be paying non resident anyways.
