Title: 7mm-08
Post by: Shadrach71 on June 18, 2017, 07:15:38 PM
Has anyone hand loaded the 7mm-08 with 120gr TTSX and used them on deer? If so how did they perform and would you use them again? What kind of realistic numbers were you getting?
Thanks,
 Shad

My 12 year old shoots a Ruger American Compact 7mm-08 and uses 120gr Nosler Spitzer handloads. Roughly 3100fps and killed his first buck dead. He will continue to shoot these unless we move him up to a 140gr to be better suited for deer and elk.

Son#1 has used this combo on two small cow moose, no major bones were incountered, but they did a sufficient job. We've also used these on several deer. Go forth and slay with confidence. I've also used the 6.5 120 TTSX On deer and antelope.

The only thing you need to be mindful of is the FPS. X bullets need little a more velocity than other bullets for expansion. That bullet will do fine on deer and elk as long as you aren't going for long range (expansion issues), so load them up and shoot with confidence.

I've used "light for caliber" TSX and TTSX bullets in a variety of calibers with excellent results (80 grains in a 257 Weatherby, for example.)

I think that's an ideal deer bullet if it shoot well in your rifle. Being 120 grains it should have slightly less recoil than heavier bullets.

I have a load I have been working up with 120 TTSX and am getting right at 3075 fps with 45gr of RL15. Its just a summer project so have not taken a deer with this load but anticipate that it will excellent within reasonable ranges based an past experience with the TTSX in other calibers.

I tested 120 gr TTSX with 47.5 gr of IMR4895 which chrono'd at 3240 fps and they shot tight groups, but I have yet to hunt with them.  I mean to kill a deer with them, but for some reason, my hand goes right to the .280 X-Bolt during deer season.  I have no doubt that the Barnes combo would do a number on a deer, and one of these seasons I'll grab the 7-08 and find out.
