I've got an original 74 CJ 5. Doesn't hold a candle to that M38! That thing is a real working piece of American history!

I owned a Willys, they are kind of like boats. The best day of my life was when I got it. Second best day was when we got rid of it. I enjoyed every second of driving it, but man was that thing a mechanical nightmare.

It has a cool story I obviously don't know how much of it is true... apparently it was an air force vehicle in Germany, some bored Air Force mechanics rescued it from the scrap heap and rebuilt it with a Small Block 283 Chevy. They then shipped it back to the US. It then had big fuel tank added to the back and it was driven across the country. It spent 30yrs in a Barn and the last guy had it for about 3 yrs and then suffered a back injury and can't drive it anymore. He was using it as his daily driver! I drove it from Anacortes to Lynnwood without an issue it sure was interesting!

If it has old military numbers or dataplates some history can be verified. A restoration forum called Steel Soldiers has lots of good info and one member has some access to some databases.

Thanks, I have been looking at that site, amazed by the amount of information and parts that are available. It still has part of its German tag on the front bumper and a window sticker pass for Fairchild Af base from the 70s.

I'm not sure on your rig but often times there is a stamp/data plate on the front of the frame
