I was talking with a friend who is up in age. As his fourth choice he selected Mashell on the advice of his buddy who said he has contacts w/property owners in that Unit.
Long story short is: he got drawn and the contacts his "buddy has" are... shall we say, don't exist in that GMU.
Any advice on how he should proceed would be very much appreciated.

What tag??

What tag??
I will find that out this evening

Scott Turner rd has a few walk in only areas, dont have to go very far to get into elk. I believe thats in the mashell unit. Theres also a horse camp on the left going towards Ashford I use to work horses back in there and seen quit a few elk in there. Worth a scouting trip.

I would guess it is the dec-jan cow tag. Lots of time to goo knock on doors between now and then. Or call Shane, I'm sure he has leases that will work.

Get a hancock pass and it will only take 10 min to fill it

Hancock doesn't allow elk hunting unless you win their drawing.

Lots a elk and cougar. Once pressure kicks in it gets tough! Go remote and deep or into Hancock like the poachers! :yike: Beaver creek area decent.

If it is the late winter Cow tag then Hancock DOES allow access for it...in fact, that tag is only on Hancock property! It's not the entire Mashel GMU, just a portion of it, and is part of an agreement with WDFW when it comes to elk damage on Hancock property since Hancock does not allow GENERAL season access...they can't claim elk damage if they don't allow hunting for the elk so the cow tags help cull the herd (or more than likely allow Hancock to file for tax breaks/grants for elk damage...just a guess though).

PS. you still have to buy the pass for the winter hunt...they might offer a day pass for it though.

You can hunt anywhere in the elk unit for the damaged hunt not just Hancock lands. The hunt is for the farmers land where the elk have damaged fences etc. Call the bio and they will give you farmers numbers to call. If you hunt Hancock you will have to buy a seasons pass.

Westside...check the regs again...he said his buddy drew a Mashel tag...that is ELK UNIT 6054...not GMU 654. and Elk Unit 6054 is pretty much all of Hancock's lands south of the Puyallup River (yes, there is some private lands off of Scott Turner...good luck getting permission though and they are not farmers fields but small hobby farms and houses). I think you were thinking of the Puyallup special permit which is Elk Unit 6014...that is the farmers fields damage hunt.

Been on the hunt 4 different times and yes you can get permission :twocents:

State DNR land in the Elbe Hills is apart of the 6054 elk area as well, if you plan to hunt state land in the Mashel Unit send me a PM and I can give you some areas.

I find cow elk from about rifle elk season to about Feb in the lower portions of Elbe hills. Depends on when the snow starts falling. Sometimes its hard to drive through there with all the cows running across the roads.

If you get drawn for this tag you can hunt thier property. Ive done it with a couple friends that have been drawn for it.
