Title: Bugle/Grunt Tube for Rosies
Post by: mitch184 on August 21, 2017, 04:04:40 PM
Probably a little late to be learning, but decided to throw a bugle/grunt tube in the arsenal this year since I might be doing muzzy.

Any recommendations for a bugle newb?  Unless I'm feeling confident with how it sounds by the opener, I wouldn't even bring it.  Figure unless it sounds decent at best, probably does more harm than good.

thanks

Practice, practice, practice. You would be amazed at what some bulls answer to. Read a thread earlier about a predator rabbit call sent a bull into a bugle. I've witness a young spike come up to a landing on a mid hot day lunch break turkey gobble call. Buddy was chasing his wife around doing that. Not a bow in hand when that little guy pops out on the landing. So just cause you think it sounds bad.  Doesn't always mean it is. But you should practice and get it fined tuned. Chuckles and all. Good luck.

Mitch, if you're talking a tube and using diaphragms... it's takes more than a month to get to the point where you can make the 4 or 5 necessary elk sounds that will stand with you in battle effectively.  At this point, I would recommend getting an internal reed bugle (either Berry Thunder Bugle or Elknuts XTR Chuckler)... either one of those are easy to use and you can get a good handful of bull elk sounds out of them.  For your cow noises, there are a good handful of decent bite/blow calls out there that will serve the purpose at hand.  More importantly than the sounds you make are when you make them!  See, elk do have a language.. When they vocalize, they are either talking socially (howdy, how the hell are you and I like what you've done with your mane), or asking for or needing something.  THAT is the crux of the talking to elk biscuit.  Give me a holler if you want and I can perhaps get you on the right track for this season.  RJ

I know this sounds silly but it does work for Rosies, Long Flexible Drinking Straws se photo. Along with a good cow call nothing better. And easy to use and you can bet the next beer at a bar with friends as well that say it cant be done.  :twocents:

So when I popped out for a few hours Saturday, I used a cow call called: primos cow girl. Its an awesome sliding mew/chirp. You can work it to get a nice lead cow mew. Or purse your lips tighter and produce a great calf call. I have an E.L.K Power Bugle which is a great band call and a primos terminator. Taking time to practice is key. Good luck

I would look into the Phillips estrous cow call. Very easy to use. Also there amp reeds are easier then most to. I have their bugle tube. But like WapitiTalk1 said. Month before the season opener. I would focus more on internal reed tube. I dont use the internal reed so I'm no help with that. But again. Practice is what's key. Nothing better then a worked up bull screaming in your face yards away. Good luck.

Mitch, it's not too late bud to learn how to use a Bugle for Location purposes. In most elk hunting/calling situations a bugle is used similar to ones optic, with either your main use is to find elk not bring them to you. You have plenty of time to use an External Reed Bugle for this purpose. If at a later date you'd wish to learn mouth reeds you can also do that with the same bugle by removing the external reed portion. Here's a video clip of the Chuckler XTR Bugle that functions in both ways, it's the best of both worlds! (grin) Check it out bud!

Correct.  At first just trying to use it to get a response and figure out a general area.  I realize this is probably being optimistic that I'll be able to pin point where the return came from, but that's my thought.  I don't think I'd be confident enough yet to try and actually draw one in.  Too much of a chance that I blow them out

Use a bugle sparingly.  Most folks tend to over do it and the bulls will shut up.  I have noticed that in the areas that I hunt a Hoochie Mama and a Primos Terminator will shut the bulls up faster than anything.  The do (for some reason) respond very well to an E.L.K. Power Bugle or a Sceery cow call.  I am hearing really good things about the Reel Elk cow calls.  Got one on order and will be testing it out soon.  As said before, practice, practice, practice!  And Roosies tend to like quicker and shorter calls unlike those long drawn out 5 minute rocky bugles. Mimic what you hear unless it is another hunter,

I think the hoochie mama is the worst thing to happen to elk hunting ever

Yep.  They scare off more elk than any other call out there.

Make sure to get plenty of practice using that Sceery call if that's what you have or you might come across sounding like a wounded duck.  Just trust me on this. :o
