Title: High Hunt the Entiat - Trails clogged with downed timber
Post by: muleracks on August 31, 2017, 03:46:58 PM
Entiat High Hunt (NOT).  The Entiat Ranger District trail crew was unsuccessful in their effort to logout the Entiat River Trail.  Hundreds of logs block access to the Entiat Meadows.  The other Wilderness trails have not been touched since 2013 plus the 2015 Wolverine fire added to the backlock of down timber.  Trails are open to the public but they are difficult to follow and very difficult to climb over, under and around the downed trees.  There are GPW Wilderness trails logged out in the Entiat: these are all very much clogged with trees; Cow Creek, Larch Lakes, Pumas Pass, Ice Creek, Cool Creek, Upper Entiat above Candy Creek (9 miles in), Wilson Creek, 45 mile Sheep Drive, Snow Brushy Creek, west end of Pyramid Mtn trail, Choral Creek.  Most Non-wilderness trails did get logged out; exceptions are Anthem Creek and Shetipo

The Entiat River Road did reopen this summer (closed since 2014) and some of the campgrounds are open.  The Wilderness boundary is 4.75 miles from Cottonwood and not much for deer to eat in the burn so I would High Hunt a different location this September.

Sounds like a guy could get in there and maybe not have a ton of competition.

Snow Brushy is doable; only 513 logs down from the Entiat trail to 3.5 mile in.
Wouldn't be much fun trying to reach the Entiat Meadows.
Ice Creek is bad but Larch Lakes can be hiked without too much trouble.
photo 1 is Larch Lks trail, 2 is the Entiat River Trail (100s of trees down).

Lots of area adjacent to the burn that has excellent vegetation and feed.

What a waste, they need to allow saws for crews in the area to make it accessible again.  Most likely wont happen but we can wish.  Sorry for yours and everyone elses loss of access the last four years and this year, impossible to get a packstring through.  Hopefully the restricted access can allow the migratory herd of the upper valley to recover a bit with less pressure, trying to look for a positive.

Im going to bet some of those trials won't be clear for some years. That's just to much work with cross cut saws and hand tools.
