Title: Can anyone help me identify what animal makes this sound?
Post by: BigFishGuy on September 19, 2017, 09:52:19 AM: Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I've got something I'm hoping someone can help me with. I'm not sure if this is the best place to post an audio recording, but I didn't see anywhere else that made sense. I was camping with a friend and his son this weekend near Newaukum Lake (a few miles north of Cinebar, WA) and we woke up to this sound off in the distance, maybe 100 yards away or so.
The "cries" happened over about a 5 minute period before they stopped. They happened 4 times, about 20 cries each time, with about 30 seconds in between set. The audio isn't real time, I cut out a bunch of our conversation, footsteps, and other noises, to try to just get the most clear examples that I could. So the timing may sound weird. There was definitely a pattern to them, and no overlap. It seemed like one animal in one location. After about 5 minutes it stopped and we didn't hear anything else for the next 30 minutes before we left for the day.

Me 3. It could be a bear vocal and it could be a cougar. Both can make that sound as could a lynx or bobcat. But the continued repetitive pattern leans toward a recorded sound. I don't know the FoxPro library well enough, nor any other recorded sound that I use enough to ID this one. I'd guess a recording of a near adolescent bear cub based on the sound.

If it is live, then I'd say cat, because I have heard them repeat a sound every 30-60 seconds over a half hour span, but it was always one cry, then the long pause, never more than one cry at a time. Not sure but lean toward a recorded sound.

Didn't think a recorded sound until it was brought up, but if someone had access to it on a Foxpro, it could prove successful in calling in a momma bear or even a mountain lion. Early morning would also suggest someone hunting and using a electronic call. :twocents:

Given it is Bear hunting season in that area, it was likely a hunter using this call. Although the sound varied in pitch, tone, and depth...
Based on their sound sample I'm not sure if it varies the sound or if it just does the same sound repeatedly. In either case, it was likely a real bear cub in distress, or a bear call of one.

If someone was calling bears/lions at night, hunting big game at night is not permitted so IDK.
Might been a cat or some critter killing a cub or deer if it was indeed at night.
He is a real life doe distress/bawl.

Could be setting the stand up. Explains the 4 sets every 30 seconds. Trying to get away from foxpro but can't use range finder to stay within the 200 yard remote control range. Also explains why it went silent for 30 minutes prior to them leaving. Waiting for daylight to turn it on and let run. :dunno:

Or momma found it and they moved on.
