Title: How to not share your location when taking photos—iPhone
Post by: jackelope on September 29, 2017, 08:16:41 AM
There seems to be a phobia about posting photos you take from your phone and sharing your location when you do.  I don’t know how to tell you to maneuver around it with other brands of phones but here’s what you do with an iPhone.
Go to Settings —>Privacy—>Location Services.
Here you can turn it off completely or you can customize it so it’s on for some apps and off for others. I use my phone for work and there are things I need to have it on for so mine are on, and then turned off for certain apps. Maybe someone can show how to do it with the Samsung or other brand name phones.

For my Samsung Anxriod. I go to settings app. Scroll down to Location turn off. Go to Privacy and turn all off. Haven't seen any Washington plates in Idaho where we hunt.  :chuckle:

But if the picture is already taken before you turn location off it would still have the meta data in it.  Not sure if copying a photo changes the data stored. I'm just not sure what photos had it on when I took them.

If you aren't sure, then screen shot them.

It will say the location at the top of the picture, i.e. "Pasco, WA."

First is one taken with location on. Second is a screenshot of that picture.

As has been mentioned, you can simply screenshot the image to remove the metadata.  This however leads to a significant degradation in picture quality.

Alternatively, in a post production environment (like Lightroom for example) you can easily remove metadata...or even modify it.

Not that anyone would do such a thing.   ;)  :chuckle:

Removing metadata is a simple process and doesn't require 3rd party software like Lightroom.

In Windows Explorer right-click on the image, select Properties, click the Details tab, and click "Remove Properties and Personal Information." You can choose to remove all properties, or select ones.

True...except that in your example you are, in fact, using external third party software.  ;)

Point being that you've got to get it off the iPhone into some other program.  Some people use Lightroom. Some use MS Photos. Etc.

If someone has a Windows PC, Windows Explorer is included and doesn't require additional cost. Windows Explorer can access images on an iPhone or Android device.

Jackelope-
Why the exaggeration with the use of the word "phobia"?  With the liberal dominated software and computing industry that dominates nearly every move we digitally make, there is ample concern for anonymity and privacy that does not extent ones discomfort to the level of, according to Webster:  ‘an extreme or irrational fear’
You have a lot of latitude with your postings. I encourage you to realize your statements are not always universally accepted and thus, like the rest of us, should be tempered with respect to all
I wish you well

I used the word "phobia" because people have a fear of sharing their locations. It's a fact. I didn't look it up in the dictionary before I typed. My bad. I guess I could have used the word "fear" or "people are afraid to share..." or a multitude of other words or phrases. Regardless of how you look at it, people are afraid to share their location.  Really I was just trying to help. I'll keep this in mind next time. Have a good day.

It is good of you to bring this up Josh, thanks.  I've been extra concerned about my photo's showing my location for a couple years now, ever since I'm sure my honey hole went to crap in Idaho after posting pic's years ago off my phone.   :bash: :bash:

Thanks for the cordial follow up Jackelope.  It’s not nearly as important to always agree as it is to freely communicate, enlighten and glean where we can.  As a father of four and in my mid-fifties, I still strive for this nearly every day!
I wish you well

Thanks for the info! Will do this in the future with my iphone! Phobia would be the correct word to use btw... since it is in fact an irrational fear! We all want to keep our spots and areas a secret and fear others finding them!
