Lets see pics of the biggest spike elk you have gotten. Here is a pic of a spike my buddy and I got a few years back. That was a tough day. We packed out two spikes in one day. Started at 0900 hrs and got back to the truck at 2300 hrs.
-
We packed out the first one and then when driving out of the area we spotted this one way up the mountain. After we shot it we figured we could just drag it down the hill easy enough. Not so easy. There were dead falls everywhere and it was so steep I got ran over about a dozen times(by the elk).

I was just about to ask how in the world you packed it out whole.
Nice work!!

Have never shot a spike, but saw one up in the Marble unit one year hunting that had 4 foot spikes. They were like sabers, as big around as my forearm at the base. Gamey told me later that the bull had been a 6x7 the year before, and regressed.
-
never shot a spike. But I helped a guy load a 3x1 into his truck. It had a ton of mass and the 3 point side was like a club.
-
here is mine my packout was pretty easy droped him on a old skidder road pulled right up to him with the quad and got him out.

This is how I know our state is the worst in the West. There is a forum for who shot the largest spike!!! BTW buckmaster if you grow that beard for Montana I will shave half of it off. :chuckle:
-
My two biggest 2001 and 2008 both over 22"
-
Here is my one and only.
-
Here is my first and only spike from Idaho 2005. Sorry, most of the pictures didn't turn out, so this is all I was left with...disposable camera. I was recently married and my wife helped me haywire this Bull to the road 400 yards up hill. This is a good way to test a marriage....
-
sorry for the real bad clearity, dont have a scanner so i had to take a picture of it. but i shot this when i was 12 and the game biologist said it was a 4 year old bull with real bad genetics
-
.
-
Whoa firecrotch that thing is huge. If the bio was right thank goodness you killed it and took it out of the gene pool. Hopefully it didn't breed any cows. I don't think anyone is going to top that spike. That is a big spike. If there was a Boone and Crockett club for spikes that thing would definately make it. :chuckle:
-
I don't know firecrotch, this one is pretty huge. ;) Its spikes are so long I was convinced it was a cow until I tracked it down, and I shot it at 27 yards.
-
looks like you made a perfect shot on that spike too!!
-
yeah looks like a good lung shot!
-
Yep, that red brush behid him is all blood. But yours firecrotch is the biggest one I've ever seen.
-
we shot 4 spikes that day ill try and get the picture up on here
-
Good pics!!! haven't shot a spike yet but there will come a day I will.
-
me and my spike that you saw on the last page is on the bottom left hand corner. sorry for the clearity again
-
dude you were right about the militia
-
Holy spikes. Apparently when you guys are in the woods, spikes should run for the nearest closed unit. Nice work.
-
Here is my spike elk from Idaho. Thought I was going to die trying to pack this guy out. Would never ever shoot another elk on that hillside again. Look at the lake below and how far it drops off! :bash:

LMAO. fishunt that spike is awsome. That is one goofy looking *censored*. You say you :hunter: stalked him, Are you sure the spike didn't have down syndrome? Nice shot though.
-
i seen one in manastash 3 years ago that was a 5x1. the spike side had more mass and length then the mainbeam of the 5 side which was small like a rag horn rossy. coolest bull ive ever seen though. and he jumped the string on a 20yd shot :bash: :bash: :bash:
some guy shot it the next day at 50yds with a recurve just down the road from my camp.

well im not sure washington is the worst state in the west oregon has permits you can draw that are spike only, could you imagine saving up points just to try and kill a spike, pointless
-
Who the heck would put in for a spike only hunt?
-
RC3 shot this goofy 5x1 Roosevelt a few years ago....
-
MrGoodwrench thats a cool bull. Do you got any frontal view pics of it?
-
Here is one of mine from a few yrs back.

^^^^^^^^ :chuckle: i thought you were Chuck Norris for a second. anyone else think they look similar? nice spike by the way.
-
:chuckle: The association has been made before...I guess it could be worse... :chuckle:
-
Fletch counted to infinity! TWICE!
When the boogey man goes to sleep, he checks under the bed for FLETCH!
-
Doublelung has a cool picture of a big one, keep waiting for him to post it. I might have to beat him to it if I can find it.
-
Buckmaster, here ya go.....
-
Man i forgot how screwed up that elk was, haha
-
Good thing you got him out of the gene pool.neat elk.
Yeah no kidding. Look at that one antler it almost comes out of his forehead. Cool/weird looking rack though. Congrats.
-
Yeah its a cool bull, its not mine, RC3 shot him....if I remember right he had no ivories too
-
No ivories. Weird. He really was a retarded bull.
-
and a club foot..............
I can't lie either, I was done hunting and headed home and it just stepped right out of the reeprod in front of me. Wasn't too tough, got out of the pickup ran into the woods and shot him at about 75 yards. He ran about 30 yards and died crossing a beaver pond and when I got up to him only his spike side was sticking out of the pond, that was a little scary.
-
The spike that i killed with the longest horns were about 26"
I saw a saber spike while I was hauling logs up on the 2500 above the Green river right after the mountain blew that was pushing 4 ft.
Saw another one close to it out on the prairie past Toledo.Actually got a shot at it and missed. That tells you how long ago that was.20 years or better.
-
Found the pic.....

Holy crap bone. Is he legal or not? He doesnt branch above the ear on his right side. :chuckle: If I saw him in a spikeonly unit I wouldnt shoot him, just not sure about him.
-
thats awesome!!! world record spike right there
-
Holy cow bone that is crazy. Where did you take that picture at?
-
Looks to me like maybe the burn on Dome Peak??? But that is a total guess. :dunno:
-
I wish I could claim it, but its not mine. Picture of one COOL animal though.
-
That bull is every spike hunters Dream!!
-
Holy crap bone. Is he legal or not? He doesnt branch above the ear on his right side. :chuckle:
Per the regulations I would say that is indeed a legal "spike". Anyone disagree? :dunno:
Of course, by the time I "did the math" in my head on whether it was legal he would be running through the forest in the opposite direction.
-
I think he is legal, but if you shot him you would have every game warden within 100 miles on top of you. It is touchy, and my depend on the game warden you talk to. For me, not sure if I would shoot it, but damn, I don't know.
-
Tough call. But those other points are below the ear, as per the new rule
-
Shoot the SOB and deal with the gamies if they complain
-
:yeah:
they say part of the reason they changed it to spike only is because spikes are alot of the time bad genetics and we have to many spikes running around. i would say that bull has bad genetics
-
He'd be dead if I seen him in a spike only unit.
Its all I could see ;)
-
those are some nice spikes ;)
-
A couple of spikes out of 360.
Not the biggest ... but great eating.
Mine and my buddies.
-
Welcome to the Site. I see some good :cue: there.
-
Those look geat! Glad to see your sucess! TASTY!
-
campcoffee nice elk. i think the bottom one is winking at me ;)
-
i saw a guy shoot a bull that had broken of part of its antler and left a spike with just the brow tine left
the other side was a 6 point and he didnt have any problems, but i guess it wold depend on the warden
