Smackout pack, once targeted by WDFW, kills cow
"The attack was the first confirmed depredation by the pack since July 22 and the third in less than three months, according to WDFW. The department will consider culling a pack after four depredations within 10 months or three depredations within 30 days."
"Hedrick said his family’s operation has lost at least 10 cows to wolves this year, though the number could rise as the ranch tries to bring in cattle from grazing allotments, he said."

Can’t be too profitable feeding wolves.
Most folks have learned WDFW only prolong the livestock predation…..

One operator's losses exceed twenty grand, a conservative guess, not knowing how many pair they had. Take it out of the WAG budget

Saw 4 people (including at least one confirmed WDFW) on Smackout Pass Rd. powerline investigating a dead cow on or around that day, the 9th. Looked like CNF Land.

Perhaps that is where the Large Canine live trap was headed in the back of the WDFW truck in Chewelah on Sunday. :dunno:

This is shocking. Who'd have thought that not taking out the entire pack would result in more cattle dying????? Oh yeah, everyone with a brain. Never mind. :bash:

Relocating problem wolves has been in the works since the beginning of the fraud and corruption of the wolf introduction.

Not sure what kind of trap you saw but it would be virtually impossible to catch a wolf in a live trap no matter what the size. The Department know this and I can't believe they would waste their time.
What you saw was either for something else or possibly a holding cage but not a trap, IMO.

It was a guillotine drop door trap. Size was guessing one of the largest I have seen. Pretty much filled up the back of the pick-up box. Perhaps the WDFW is aware of this but if they set a trap they can say they are doing something. :twocents:

Sounds like a bear live trap possibly adapted for other uses. There are also deer/elk traps that use a guillotine door. Just because it was in the back of the truck doesn't mean they were going to drop it off and try to capture a wolf. What I'd like to know is who was it and what are they doing? A license plate number or a photo would have been great. Has anyone bothered to ask WDFW?

The first word was "Perhaps" as to imply that could have been the destination. Since it was a WDFW truck I would venture to guess they might have been on board.

Seen tracks of what seemed like a lone wolf up on Gillette on Tuesday.

That could be.
If it was a cage trap I would be skeptical of it being a bear trap but it could be for cougar complaints.

They live trap wolves all the time to collar them, it wouldn't be hard to release t hem somewhere else. BTW, they use leg traps on wolves.
