Whats up with these guys drawing a tag and then not hunting? :bdid: I don't like seeing a ton of people in the woods but give the tags to people who will use them!!

I don't see a problem. I'm sure the WDFW already takes into account a certain percentage of hunters won't hunt, and they base the number of permits accordingly. If more people hunted, more bears would be killed and the number of permits would be reduced.

I posted about this last year and got a ear full!!!!

That not what I was told by a bio last year.
They set tag numbers expecting that number of people to hunt, not to be succesfull, but to hunt.
If they planned on a certain percentage to not participate and then everyone turned out, harvest numbers would be too high.

You lost me with that. Sorry. :dunno:
Sounds like you're disagreeing with your first sentence, then agreeing with the remainder of your post.

You both lost me now :chuckle:

I think it all comes down to those of us who would hunt like mad-men/women if given the chance but never get the chance because we can't get drawn.

I think I'll go get a beer, then maybe this will all make sense. :IBCOOL:

There I tried to clear it up a little, yes I disagree with you :chuckle:

Ya that too.

I'll just be glad that many people (supposedly) do not even use their permits. That leaves more bears for us for when we DO finally draw.
I'm just not sure how accurate those statistics are. Some may just lie and say they didn't hunt, and other simply do not do a harvest report, whether succesful or not.

It looks like most do the harvest reports, probably to avoid a $10 fine. I hope people aren't giving false reports,as bad a WDFW is that would make things worse.

Sure it sucks for those who put in for the draw and don't get selected but life happens and some may not have had the opportunity to get out for one reason or another and some don't report (guilty from last year). If there are X amount of tags given out, then X amount should report, some don't. My question is how can you have X amount given out and more than X people reporting? Are they just reporting for the wrong units?
-
PEOPLE LIE! A lot of "sportsmen" believe that the WDFW uses input to make decisions on what to allow the "natives" to harvest just like (Salmon/steelhead) report cards. So they claim not to have hunted.
-
yep. Life happens and sometimes you don't get out when you plan too. I'm still bitter about last elk season....
I mean, who plans a wedding on opening weekend?!

Tell me about it! My dad is taking us four boys to Alaska fishing for 4 days with a buddy of his charter business. We leave the day after my wife and I anniversary (dodged that bullet) but my brother got his wife prego and she is due 4 days before we are supposed to leave. Sucks he isn't going now.

I will pretend to be your brother to go fishing in Alaska!!

This topic comes up every year and this is the third year here. :IBCOOL:
Some people have issues that come up and keep them from hunting. In the past I have known or heard about divorce, loss of job, broken vehicle, could only hunt a day or two, sickness, emergency, etc.
The other side is those who falsely report or don't report. I think most are falsely reporting in the way as if they hunted but were unsuccessful then they just say they didn't hunt so they don't have to answer the next couple questions. I think this is the F&W's fault. You can make a reporting system that forces peole to give answers. Don't give them the easy way out.
I really doubt that anyone applies for a permit thinking that if drawn they won't hunt.
-
Im really hoping that I draw this year............ :dunno:

I think btkr hit it on the head right there.

What do you mean?! His work was done 9 months ago?

If you look at other permits as to drawing and not hunting, even the goat/sheep/moose permits have people who drew and did not hunt.
Some of the people who drew spring bear wanted a tag just in case they saw a bear while working in the area drawn.
Spring bear also coinsides with mushroom picking and turkey seasons.
