Hi all,
So I just trapped a skunk and am wondering if anyone has an ethical way to kill it so he won't spray? Would like to skin him for a home tanning experiment...thanks in advance!

Skunks are actually very friendly when confined to a small cage. Just open the door and grab it by the tail and pull it out and take it to your truck , release it on the passenger side , drive it to the nearest river , and release it. I don't think you'll have a problem.

Drowning is the best method. Just be sure your water source is deep enough. Don't ask how I know this tidbit.
If skunks are a big problem they make specialized traps that you can drown the skunk right in the trap. Makes dealing with the stinkers way easier.

Best way in my op is to trap near a water source with long rope attached to trap so you can slowly drag trap into the water,They don't spray what they don't see.If drowned this way they don't stink when skinning them so bad. :twocents:

Tips? Don't get sprayed in the face. I got sprayed in the face from about 2 feet. It'll change your whole outlook on life for a long time.

Thank you all for the advice. I'm going to go out there and reassess the situation...I moved the last one by carrying the trap covered in towels so it couldn't see...but I'd like to either drown it or gas it with co2 if I can...

Release it alive & post the video here. I'd like to see it. :chuckle:

Can you put it into a cardboard box and hook it up to your tail pipe? What about a brain shot?

I am a firm believer in gassing or injection. Shooting them often results in them spraying. Drowning can be effective but requires access to water and if you get caught transporting it down the road, your probably going to get cited. Skunks don't want to spray. Watch their behavior, walk slowly and talk softly. Drape a drop cloth over the cage and lift it nice and easy into a tub with a lid. Hook up your CO2 hose on very light pressure and it over in 10 to 15 minutes. I did close to a hundred this year and only the very early youngsters sprayed.

This should be a good reminder to all who read this. Think Ahead!!!!!
Any time you put out a baited set there is the possibility of catching a skunk. What are you going to do?
Better to think about that question now then wait until the problem is staring you in the face.

ya this !!!
I've trapped 3 spotted ( civets) skunks this week and I've never dealt with them before until now
I went real slow and covered them up and 2 of the three were fine but one juvenile sprayed so much it was friggin horrible

Thanks again to everyone who posted on the thread...only my second one live-trapped but I will say this, he walked into a set trap that had zero food/bait in it. I had just emptied the trap the day before from the first one I trapped and had left the trap open/set outside but was way behind the house...
In the end, no spray and all is good!

Needs a little more bath time...

Every time I read a thread about trapping skunks I sorta get the shakes and remember back when my uncle conned me into shooting one with a bow and arrow. I think that's when the definition of PTSD comes from.
-
Yeah they are pretty easy to trap if the trap is on a path they walk they will just walk right in. That made my trapping them so much easier.
I target skunks because they cause problems. I only trap the problem skunks but that was still 6 or 7 this year. I for whatever reason am not all that bothered by the spritzing. So I make a pretty good skunk trapper :chuckle:
Glad you got it done without much fuss.

I never set a cage trap on the ground that isn't either covered by cardboard or some other type of covering. Nice job dispatching it without getting sprayed. :)

This method is best to phone a friend and use his truck so he can hold it to be safe and not harm the Skunk while driving :chuckle: :twocents:
