Title: dog dish recommendations
Post by: vandeman17 on December 11, 2017, 04:09:08 PM: Like most labs, one of mine inhales her food. I am thinking about trying one of those bowls that are made to slow down their eating. Does anyone have one that they would recommend?

Mine is 5 and has always ate fast. She gets 2.5 cups of food twice per day and my 7 year old lab gets 1.5. They start eating at the same time and my 5 year old finishes hers before the other one is half way done. :yike:

I had a lab that would have stomach problems. The vet told me that it can be a problem with bigger dogs and that I should elevate his food. I did and the problem was solved. He always ate fast and I think he was getting too much air in his stomach. Eventually he would puke the vet told me I was lucky because some dogs don't puke and then it can be a real problem.

I elevate my food when possible too. She still gets lots of air but almost like clockwork, a huge, manly burp comes out about a minute after she finishes.

Post by: WA hunter14 on December 11, 2017, 04:55:25 PM: I have two hounds that also inhale there food, it may be frowned upon but I started feeding them without a bowl I just pour their food on the ground in a clean place and it takes them now about 4 minutes to eat rather than 30 seconds.

Mine are several years old and it looks like they may have redesigned it but I don't like the new design. I tried a couple and found the Kong bowl to be the best. There are some on eBay for about $14.

Post by: Stein on December 11, 2017, 05:51:18 PM: Yeah, get one of the maze looking slow feed bowls. Our lab is almost 2 and she still needs it. When she was younger, she would pile through the food and then barf it right up. It looked 100% the same as before she started, not a single kibble bit or broken. They work great, she still eats fast, but much more controlled and no barfing.

that is an idea too. Might have to try it. I have an old cookie sheet I don't use anymore.

Any breed of dog can pig out. For me (shorthair with a deep chest) it's about avoiding bloat. I also like the Outward Hound bowls mentioned above. If you shop around you can find them cheaper than the website.
