Title: dog dish recommendations
Post by: vandeman17 on December 11, 2017, 04:09:08 PM
Like most labs, one of mine inhales her food. I am thinking about trying one of those bowls that are made to slow down their eating. Does anyone have one that they would recommend?

Funny you mention that.  I have a lab pup about 5 months old now that is done eating in about 45 seconds and waiting for second helpings.  Eating machines

I put a couple toys in his bowl on top of the food and it works well. He hasn't figured out he could just take them out yet.

Mine is 5 and has always ate fast. She gets 2.5 cups of food twice per day and my 7 year old lab gets 1.5. They start eating at the same time and my 5 year old finishes hers before the other one is half way done.  :yike:

I'm sure you guys know this but if your dog eats fast its probably a good idea to elevate the food. I had a lab that would have stomach problems. The vet told me that it can be a problem with bigger dogs and that I should elevate his food. I did and the problem was solved. He always ate fast and I think he was getting too much air in his stomach. Eventually he would puke the vet told me I was lucky because some dogs don't puke and then it can be a real problem.

I elevate my food when possible too. She still gets lots of air but almost like clockwork, a huge, manly burp comes out about a minute after she finishes.

I have two hounds that also inhale there food, it may be frowned upon but I started feeding them without a bowl I just pour their food on the ground in a clean place and it takes them now about 4 minutes to eat rather than 30 seconds.

I have two labs. Both use a Kong Slow Feed bowl. Mine are several years old and it looks like they may have redesigned it but I don't like the new design. I tried a couple and found the Kong bowl to be the best. There are some on eBay for about $14.

Yeah, get one of the maze looking slow feed bowls.  Our lab is almost 2 and she still needs it.  When she was younger, she would pile through the food and then barf it right up.  It looked 100% the same as before she started, not a single kibble bit or broken.  They work great, she still eats fast, but much more controlled and no barfing.

I had the same problem with my lab, we switched to this maze bowl and it helped slow him down, still eats fast but not as fast.

Try a baking pan where the food is spread in one layer all over the pan. They have to slow down to pick at it.

that is an idea too. Might have to try it. I have an old cookie sheet I don't use anymore.

I've fed smaller portions spread out through the day. That seems to help, at least with the ones that eat so fast they regurgitate it.

I've got this one for my lab. He has been using it since he was around 13 weeks old. Works great, and it is hilarious to watch a young pup eat out of one of these.

What breeds besides Labs are notorious for being pigs? I have a 5 gallon steel trash can I feed my Chessie out of. I take the top off at work and he grazes all day.

Any breed of dog can pig out. For me (shorthair with a deep chest) it's about avoiding bloat. I also like the Outward Hound bowls mentioned above. If you shop around you can find them cheaper than the website.
