Title: Cougar down
Post by: SideHillBill on December 22, 2017, 09:04:11 AM
Crossed a logging road in front of me at 30 yards. With a creek in between us. Noise allowed me to walk up the road. I went in the same place. Really dark reprod one chance for a shot no time to range her. Went for my 40 yard pin. Threaded the needle. Heard it hit bone. Cat jumped 6 feet stait up. I knew it was good hit. I waited 12 minutes before I said Hail Marys and went down in after her. Found blood and tracks. The blood was good but the trail is terrible really dry hard to see the blood. tracked her for 30 yards lost the trail circled around got in the ferns found blood went over a log when another 20 yards look to my left and there she laid about 8 feet from me. Glad she was dead LOL
After the pack out and tagging I called fish and game they met me in Acme to get her sealed. I met my taxidermy last night and we are skinning today and looking forward to eating cougar. That's itj

Rolled in flower, sait and pepper. Fried in a skillet. Cooked thoughly to 165. Officer will sealing mentioned as I understand they can carry bacteria and possibly worms. So i will cook accordingly.

cat chops are definitely just like pork  :EAT:

(always cook cougar or bear well to avoid trichinosis)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichinosis

Quote
- All meat (including pork) can be safely prepared by cooking to an internal temperature of 165 °F (74 °C) or higher for 15 seconds or more.
 - Wild game: Wild game meat must be cooked thoroughly (see meat preparation above) Freezing wild game does not kill all trichinosis larval worms. This is because the worm species that typically infests wild game can resist freezing.

Unsafe and unreliable methods of cooking meat include the use of microwave ovens, curing, drying, and smoking, as these methods are difficult to standardize and control.[13]

Congrats looks like a younger cougar

That cat has some age, look at how the teeth are yellowing, there is tooth drop, and the incisors are worn off.
If it was a young cat the teeth would be white, no tooth drop, and the incisors wouldn't be worn off.

:yeah:
The OP said it was female and they are generally smaller than the males.  A young male will outweigh an old female.  Also, photos can be deceptive.  It really depends on how you position the cat and what angle you take the photo from.  That alone can make a small cat look big and a big cat look small.

Take a look at the photos of the cats from my cougar hunt.  The first cat is a younger male and the second cat is a really old female that had just eaten a deer so she had a full belly.

Dale is an absolute wealth of knowledge when it comes to cougars.  Spending time with him hunting and in camp each day was awesome.  He answered every question I had.  I am sure it got old for him but he just kept answering.  Many times his questions prompted more questions.

He and his staff could tell the sex of the cat from the pad prints in the snow, the size of the cat from the depression in the snow, by the distance between steps and if they drug their feet.

I am not a cat expert but man I have a ton more understanding of cats and how to read their footprints than I did before.

That's what I've always told people when they ask.  I was lucky enough to have a carcass given to me many years ago, would love another.  Congratulations!

I have learned quit a bit from this experience. I just got the skull back from Eric Shelby who is doing the rug or mount. Not sure what to do actually. The field officer said he believed it to be a sub adult but it had no spotting on inter legs to support that notion. Anyway I will get a picture of the scull up here for you biology majors. Thanks again

Most of the cougar we've taken so far this year are butchered and in freezers, but I could probably save you some cougar meat in the future from a cougar when a hunter doesn't want the meat, that's if we could figure out how to get it to you.

I like serving it to people as well, let's just say, it is a very educational experience for them when they love the taste of something they have heard is only shot as a "trophy".

:yeah: totally agree, I'll try to remember you need some next season, we are pretty much done for this year unless I get some last minute hunters wanting a cat

We did a roast and it was pretty tasty. I like it fried in the skillet. I have offered it to some friends to try but no takers. All the more for me. I added a couple pics of the skull in the first post. For the guys that have done rugs instead of full body mounts do you have any regrets on one over the other?

Generally a full mount will get a lot more attention than a flat rug!  :dunno:

Full body mounts are wasted IMO, if you do not have a cool place for them.  I'll probably do a rug when I get one, but my dad has two full bodies that I get choice of some day....

Don’t tell them till after they eat it ha ha that’s what I do. I agree it’s a good way to counter the message of the antis that lions are killed only for the trophy. That is a nice looking cat but my experience with females or smaller toms is a rug will look Much better than a full body mount on that general size cat. We have both a rug and full body and my opinion is you need a real big headed tom for the full body mount. Just an opinion but I think a rug would show that cat off better. Good job also well done!
