Title: Which muzzleloader to buy
Post by: mallardaddict on December 23, 2017, 01:57:51 PM
I have pretty much convinced myself to hunt muzzleloader next year but know nothing about them. If you could buy any muzzleloader either new or used and money wasn’t an issue what would you buy and why?

Wdfw sent surveys regarding legalizing 209 primers. If I were you I would wait until the 2018 regs come out to see if the muzzleloader requirements change.

That being said I would get a knight ultra light or a knight disc extreme in a thumbhole stock. Guaranteed MOA accuracy at 200 yards and very reliable.

Depending if the law changes would determine what ignition in either one, 209 or no. 11.

 :yeah:

With the caveat that if you plan to hunt other western states, you may want a western kit, too, even if 209 primers are made legal here.  Or, just go with caps (musket or mag 11), since they'll still work just fine even if 209s are legal.

The 2 I was mainly looking at are the knight mountaineer and the disc extreme western.

I just wasn’t sure if the disc was WA legal even with the western kit due to the disc covering the cap.

The disk extreme with western kit is legal here. There is a 1/4" hole in the bolt exposing the cap.

This is a great choice. Add a peep and hooded fiber optic front sight.  There are a few threads with recommendations of front sight height.

when I was in your shoes a couple years ago I looked at many different guns and asked a lot of people a lot of questions. I ended up buying the disc extreme with thumbhole stock. I love it! shoots great, nice feel to it and very accurate

I like the cva rifles if it has a western model  changing from musket to 209 is simple. Just a new breech plug and fitting pin and you're set. I bought a wolf in February and it shoots great but if money weren't a factor probably would have gotten the optima as I don't knowof the accura is western legal.

All of the Western Knights are legal... The bolt hood does cover a portion of the cap but it is - Exposed to the weather is has bee approved as Western legal

These pictures show the bolt open and closed with the nipple exposed

The Knight is an excellent Western legal hunting rifle...

I will either buy the disc extreme or the ultra-lite. I just wish I could get the UL with a thumbhole stock so I’m leaning extreme.

Anyone know the difference between the disc extreme and the extreme xtra?

Just my opinion but for the extra $100 - I would jump all over an Ultra-Lite versus the Extreme!  Heck I would even trade you a Thumbhole for the U-Lite for the U-Lite stock!!!

I think I have a couple of extra TH that will fit the U-Lite.

We may have to talk as the cheapest I can find the extreme is $690 and the UL at $940

It sounds as though Knight offers a pretty decent LEO/ EMS discount. I will call them when the reopen on 01/02/18 and if so an UL will be headed my way.

I bought the CVA Accura nitride V2 with thumb hole stock, Northwest addition last year and love it. It is a tack driver, and very comfortable. Muzzle loader supply has them on sale for 399.00 right now. Thinking of buying another.
