An angler above Ice Harbor Dam on the Snake River had good reason to be nervous.
Washington state Department of Fish and Wildlife officers conducting a boat patrol on the river stopped to talk to two men fishing from a jetty in the area, according to the agency.
One of the men was nervous and admitted to having a steelhead in his truck.
When the officers took a look, they found a large, B-run buck steelhead with the tail cut off to leave the fish just under 27 inches long.
Current fishing regulations limit catches to a 28-inch maximum to allow the larger B-run fish to pass through because of the limited number of them returning.
The fish clearly had been well over 30 inches before the angler’s surgery on it, according to officers.
The fisherman was belligerent and claimed it had been of legal length, but his friend admitted it was not, officers said.
The fish was seized and multiple tickets issued.

Someone did an outstanding field interview
-
Not a smart move on the fisherman's part. I woulden't doubt it if the officers didn't already know about the fish in the truck. They can watch you from almost anywhere up there.
-
Haha, you’ve gotta see the picture. I was imagining a barely trimmed tail, but he hacked a pretty good chunk of fish off.
Lucky he didn’t get charged with making a false statement and obstruction of justice.
-
Were they going to claim they caught it like that? I don't understand the logic behind cutting the tail off to make length.
-
I reeled in half of a salmon once, a shark took a big cookie cutter bite off the back half. I kept it kind of hoping they would challenge the length.... :chuckle:
-
Is that fish clipped?

They probably really let him have it (as they should have). I wonder what all the charges were besides the obvious. And I wonder how much that fish is going to cost the guy......
:chuckle: I did chuckle though when I saw the pic. Funny that someone would think they would get away with doing that. :chuckle: He might of got away with it as long as no one checked him, but then he could have kept it without cutting off the tail.

“It was a shark that cut it off. The shark used a really sharp knife, which is why it looks like a human did it.”

Stupid idiots
-
Should have cut part of the nose and just half the tail. Lol!
-
All that for some boot hatchery :bash:steelhead.
-
And some still wonder why the WDFW takes the enforcement stance that they do...

Oh my!
