I'm looking at an out of state Antelope hunt this year. Will be talking to a few folks at the Sport show this week end. None of my hunting buddies can go, so this will be solo.
Just looking for advice if DIY is worth trying with out scouting or if I should go guided. Only been on 1 guided trip for Caribou so not much experience with it
Thanks, Dave

The above was a members successful DIY from last year
plenty of topics on Wyoming antelope. Most are in the "out of state hunting" board
DIY is very possible

Do you have preference points in Wyoming? Possible diy without them but definitely if you have a few. :twocents:

I don't have any points. Actually first time researching. I heard there are units that are fairly easy to draw with lots of Goats but not as many big bucks as others

Check out Mike Eastman's book on antelope hunting.
Went on my first lope hunt this year with the wife who got lucky and drew a good tag in the random draw, so my experience is pretty limited. However, it was a blast this year. Relatively small critters, too, so they would be great for a solo hunt.
I don't have much insight on tags, but my understanding is that pretty much every unit in Wyoming with a season has good numbers. They key is to find one with good enough access so that you can hunt, but not so good that the draw odds are tough. Give the game wardens down there a call once you have it narrowed down to a couple units. They are pretty helpful and willing to discuss general animal numbers and public access.

Thanks for the tips guys

Good advice. I will add that there are a number of tags you can draw with 0 points! Go have fun antelope hunting is a blast!

When you're taking to guides, be sure to ask them if they'll take you solo. A lot of guides won't take a solo hunter, and most of the ones that do charge more. Be sure to ask so you have all your info when you make the choice.

That is generally true, however the easier to draw the more private land in general.

I'm leaning towards a DIY Deer/Antelope hunt in Montana in the first week in November
Am I making a poor decision on waiting until Deer opener to hunt for Antelope?

You're probably about 25% chance of drawing 700 series antelope in Montana if you don't have any points. I've heard that the horns can start shedding by November. Cousin and I bought montana points this past year so we are at 50/50 to draw 700 series. I'm thinking about going the last week of October and trying to add a deer "b" tag to get a little more bang for the buck.
If you don't draw Montana you could buy leftover licenses in Wyoming for units that are primarily private land. If I were you and really wanted to make it happen this year I would be applying in both Montana and Wyoming. Put a primo unit for 1st choice in wyo and scour draw odds and land ownership maps for a unit with access and tags available for 2nd choice, then you can build points for the future in Wyoming and hopefully get your feet wet in the antelope game this year

Good advice, thanks

Waiting till November is risky if they lose their horns. Wyoming is the best bet, can definitely do diy, but by paying a guide it might open up a better hunt in those units full of private land.
