Title: Big bore AR-15
Post by: Jburke on January 27, 2018, 09:48:57 AM
So I think I've decided to build a big bore AR.  I'm leaning towards the 450 Bushmaster but also considering the 458 SOCOM.  Anyone have an opinion on either of them?

I think you couldn't go wrong with either. Out of the two mentioned I would lean toward the 450. I kicked it around a bit and decided just to put another upper together for one of my current AR10's chambered in .45 Raptor.

That’s what I was leaning towards. I don’t necessarily have a purpose in mind for it yet other than just because.  Any suggestion on a barrel manufacturer?

X-Caliber!

My X-Caliber .375 Raptor barrel is very accurate. The bore was pristine, like a mirror when it arrived. The finish and machining perfection.

Before ordering call them and see if they have any laying around, if they do and you like the barrel spec. You can have it right away.

I just got my muzzle brake installed on my .45 Raptor. Decided to just build another AR10 instead of going with another upper.

Just ordered the build set from Aero for my .45 Raptor. I'm going with their Cerakoted "Spent brass" set.

What’s your opinion of Davidson Defense barrels?

Never shot one. I only toss my option out from persenal expirience.

I will say this, if you know the game from the inside. Most Moderately priced AR  barrels or made by a handful of manufacturers. Just rebranded.

Besides pretty much any barrel will shoot with the right handload.

Thanks for the input.  I found what seems like a screaming deal and will just need an upper and new bolt.  Still undecided if I want to do the full build or just the upper and swap it out when needed.
Edit: that deal is sold out so back to the search

Ordered a barrel and bolt today so that’s out of the way. Got someone locally I’ll get the receivers from. Think I’ll go full build instead of just the upper

Exactly, plus it's not like the wife knows how many there are in the first place so she wouldn't even notice another one.

Got parts starting to trickle in already.  I love building these, it's like legos and every package that arrives feels like Christmas as a kid!  :chuckle:

450 Bushmaster would be a good choice. Packed one as backup for coastal grizz..would have been interesting to have smacked one in the spruce rainforest👍

If nothing else it's a fun hobby that keeps me entertained.  I don't drink or anything and my hobbies include hunting and fishing pretty much exclusively.  So if I spend a few hundred on a gun every now and then I figure it' the equivalent of those that enjoy the bars on the weekends.
