Caught some cool fish on the island so far. Figure I'd share a few pics. Caught alot of the Silver jacks.
-
Some cool looking fish whatever they are.
-
took my wife on a stingray snorkel tour, she gets seasick really bad but I thought maybe if she's actually IN the water it won't be so bad??
wrong.
Poor girl is chumming a slick, and swimming in it. If that weren't so bad there were 100's of needlefish like in your 3rd pic going on a feeding frenzy through her chum slick. So now she's puking, sick and scared.
Not sure I'll ever get her on the big water again :'(

I’ll be in Maui on Monday feb 12 I would like to do some fishing. Any advice to pass along?
I do not have a clue what I’m doing but just planned on fishing from shore

Ya I can get ya some info. I'll send ya a pm.

Hardest part for me to wrap my head around was the fact that you need no license to fish the salt water. There are size, species limits. Hawaii has a very different outlook on the natural resource of fishing than most other states.

What does that cost? Did you ship the fish?
-
You don't get to keep any of the fish on the charters. They sell em to the restaurants is what I was told. They also told me summer time is best catch alot of fish out on the charter boats. In lahaina there hasn't been much caught on the boats as of now but I think it cld be better fishing. When. Your here.
-
It costs about 300 bucks if I remember correctly, they gave me about 15# of fish and we tried to eat it all over a weeks time but couldn’t.
Here’s the deal. I’ve been on about 5 of those “give us $125 and we won’t give a crap about you catching a fish” charters. Captain Fuzzy and first mate Sam do not F around!! Doubles, maybe even a triple, no time for grip and grin pictures...it’s fish on!! It was not a giggly trip at all, it was 100% no funny business fish catching!!
**At least it was when I went :)

Blue fin trevally, Roi (grouper) and a needlefish plus a boat load of mahi mahi in the last picture, good job all.
-
Well I would like to get on a trip like that for sure. If ya could help me out much appreciated. Snds like ya know em pretty good. I leave Thursday .

Those blue spotted grouper (roi) are notorious for carrying ciguatera toxin, which will make you very sick. I was told by some natives on Maui that the red and silver near shore fish are safe to eat, don't know if that's true or they were just having fun with a haole.
-
I heard the same thing and that's why I havnt tried any. Last thing a guy needs is end up in the e.r. on vacation. Ha . Miss my elk steaks more than anything. Ha

http://dlnr.hawaii.gov/ais/peacock-grouper/
Impacts: After the introduction in the 1950s, C. argus has flourished in Hawaii. This species is not seen as a major threat to Hawaiian ecosystems; however, it is known to cause ciguatera poisoning, a common food poisoning caused by eating fish that contain ciguatoxin. It is treatable in humans, but the concern is that ciguatoxin can move up the food chain via bioamplification and spread to other species.
-
The toxin is usually not an issue in fish under 5#. It is a bio accumulation thing from algae that little critters consume and then the big critters eat them and store the toxin, mostly in fat tissue. If it is big and old, yikes!!
-
I am told the roi is not safe at any size, introduced species, causing havoc on the reef.
-
The needle fish was honestly the best fight so far. It fought harder than a 12 lb chrome steelhead. Never seen line fly off the spool so quick. Jumped outta the water prob 5 times. Way cool. I been mainly tryin to target them since but have not been able to find anymore.

Fish around the rocks for the long skinny ones, two or three kinds. Wait 'til a oi'o (bonefish) happens by, going to be a rush

Indeed, and perfectly shaped for fish tacos.
