Just picked up a 27" douglas stainless barrel for 195.00 . Gonna put it on a stagger feed 30.06 savage . Should I invest in a muzzle brake . Gonna top of the whole shebang with a sightron s3 10x50 .

It’s a personal preference. Without a brake the recoil certainly won’t be anything heavy. If your wanting to shoot longer range with it I personally would put one on it just to be able to spot shots. My savage lrh 6.5-284 never used the brake and recoil was still light
-
I also have the 6.5x284 long range hunter with scope 10.8 lbs this rifle will top that but I want to shoot to a 1000 with this one really putting it together as a practice gun. But figure I should decide before I headspace it to brake or not. I do use my brake on my lwh but doesn't really ale a difference as far as seeing the shot so far longest shot was my high hunt buck at 476

I sorta run my 6.5-284 with a brake.
-
Man that is pretty with the can on it . Bet she shoots too.

I run a 22" barrel on a Savage Action. No brake. Shoots good enough that it hits to 1250 yards....
I have debated on getting a brake, but don't be fooled that you need one

That factory brake on the lrh is a joke. All it does is make it loud with zero recoil change that I could perceive. :chuckle: my lrh was a 1/2 moa shooter consistently tho with 143 eld x. Sadly I sold it to build a custom. ...still not real sure why with how well it shot

This may or may not be a dumb question, but how does headspace relate to whether or not you have a brake on a barrel?
-
Coach might have some info on this subject as he has one and its nice as hell. Got to shoot it once......once.... :chuckle:

I’m assuming he is talking about the rifle he is building so he would want to thread for and mount the break before mounting the barrel on the action.
-
My guess is once he gets the barrel on he doesn't want to take it off again to have to take it off again.

If you have a timed brake installed on a Savage barrel without headspacing it and marking the top center of the barrel you run the very likely risk of the brake not being properly timed when you screw the barrel back on the action. The way around that is to install and headspace the barrel, then clearly mark top center before you send it off to have the brake installed. It's not 100% accurate but it's typically close enough that most people won't notice. It's not an issue if you use a self timing brake or one with radial ports.

Gotcha. Thanks for explaining that. It makes sense.

Yeah I have two actions I'm getting ready to rebarrel and I would like to be done and just shoot brake probably not needed but I don't have someone to spot for me and seeing impact at a 1000 yds alone may need a brake. Got a 6.5 creed barrel stainless on ebay for 68 bucks that's going on my .308 model 10 just for a fun gun. The 6.5x284 is meant for me to get out and hit a 1000 yards and train myself to be consistent.

What’s the barrel contour? I can spot hits at 1000 yards with my 6.5 Badger without a brake but it’s a 30” sendero contour. That’s 160gr bullets at 3350fps, so a significant step up from the recoil of the 6.5x284.

27 in barrel .871 at the muzzle. Just got it in the mail. Guy I got it from in Arizona is 70 yrs old said it has less than a 100 rnds down it. Looks pretty darn good. I think for now I'll just order the headspace guage inlet the barrel channel and see how she does. I'm thinking the gun with the big scope on it will be pushing 14lbs.
