Title: 2005 cummins, what to look for
Post by: addicted on February 18, 2018, 09:39:27 PM
Going to go look at a 2005 cummins short bed tomorrow with 230k miles on it. What should I be on the lookout for? I imagine if the tranny was already redone it would be a bonus?

Make sure to pay close attention to the transmission and how it shift under a load. If it has a programmer/electronic gauges watch trans temp under a heavy  acceleration. When turning left or right pay attention to a clunk sound, the upper and lower ball joints go out a lot on those trucks. Hopefully it's a grandpa's truck and not too heavily moded.

Look at the rear door wiring harness.  They are notorious for having broken wires that effect windows door locks speakers etc.  New wiring harnesses cost about $115 per door.  Look at the harness and ask if they have been replaced.  If they haven't they will need it soon......guaranteed.

Also ask if the injectors have been replaced. If not I'd bet they would need to be replaced sooner rather than later and that's close to a $2500- $3000 bill if you have a shop do it.

IF your worried about the injectors, take it to a shop and have them tested, also have them test blow by, both good things to do with those miles, an oil test would help to but that takes time.

Trans test is to get up to about 30 - 40 mph, then floor it, if it shuttle shifts, the trans hasn't been done, or at least done properly.  You'll know it, it won't feel like its pulling and it'll hunt for which gear it wants.

Little washy in the steering. Steering pump might be going as it was hard to turn parked. It went through 4x4 and 4low without a hitch. It shifted alright but not as smooth as my dad's that was rebuilt in the last two years. Carfax shows transmission flush at 189,000. Looks like it lived in BC all it's life till it showed up here. Started strong no smoke. All electronics worked. I'm not in a rush so we'll see. Can my local deisel shop test the injectors?

Most diesel shops can test injectors. It's actually very easy to test them. If one was bad you'd know. If one injector goes out it will shut down that bank of cylinders, there is a front bank and a back bank. So let's just say injector #2 Was bad, the front bank(1,2,3) all would not work and the truck will barely run.  Are the injectors original?

It's at a lot. The guy didn't know anything. Maybe I'll just wait till later in the year and get something with less miles

Mine was broke, I just soldered the wires back together myself.

It seems a used diesel truck is commanding a high price these days. We have a 2010 mega cab on our lot that has 110k miles on it and they’re asking $38k for it.

The mega cabs from 2006 to 2009 have really exploded in demand. 4 years ago you couldn't give them away and now everybody wants 1.  :bdid:

I have a 07 mega cab I got a few years ago for a great deal and now the asking price for them makes me want to sell, but I wont!

Yep, Older Diesel trucks are really commanding high prices. I lost out in a bidding war over a 01 cummins with a six speed. only 75k miles on it. I'd offered way over NADA retail pricing and a dealer bought it from the guy for more. Not trade in, just bought it from him. I think it went for $19k, a lot of truck, but a lot of money for a 01.

A coworker just traded in an 07 with 82k on it. The dealership listed it for over $30k and it was sold within a few days. Being a Dodge, it had lots of new parts in the front end too!

Sold my 06 for 18 K in 36 hours.  It had just shy of 180K miles.....6 speed manual.  Didn't want to sell but also did not need two rigs.  I have to say, the 2018 is a lot nicer ride.  Just wish it had the 6 speed manual.

As a thought.....30K for an 06 cummins with low mileage is not a horrible price.  Especially when you look at the cost of the new one.   :yike: :yike: :yike:

I traded in my 05 for an o6 with 50k, 6 speed and full suspension and other upgrades.  It was over 30k. I got it before it went out on the lot. Very tough market for a manual cummins.  BUT an older pre emission is a very good thing. No crap except an engine.  25k mile oil change and an air filter wash n go.  Fuel filter 1 a year 25$. 400+hp all day long and a DD clutch.  New ones-Bring it!  :chuckle:
