Title: Found a Surprise at Oak Creek Feeding Station
Post by: tonymiller7 on February 20, 2018, 07:43:16 AM
Spent the weekend in Packwood playing around with the snow, my wife and I decided to go to Oak Cr. and check out the elk.  We were surprised to see when we got there that there was zero snow there and even more surprising NO ELK.  It was nuts to see Packwood and White Pass completely covered in snow and then none there.  It's better for the elk that they are able to naturally feed but it was surprising to see this time of year.

Went to SE WA for the weekend. Drove back sunday over Snoqualmie pass...clear and dry. Beautiful day. Got to North Bend, almost white out snow and dead stopped traffic for a mile or 2 on I-90. It was crazy how little snow there is on the east side. Great for our deer and elk, but wow...

Still got lots of winter left, but hopefully it stays relatively mild on the eastside.

haven't had much snow down here in the wenatchee valley so far but just above us there has been plenty. I believe that the snow level is just about where it needs to be as far as having enough snow pack but not so low in elevation and deep that it is pushing the critters way down low.

No kidding. Last winter kicked my tail and had me darn close to buying a snow blower. I didn't but luckily i have only had to shovel my driveway a dozen or so times

Oh it overwhelmed people around here, that just had blades to move snow, you can only push it so far. I spent more time blowing out neighbors, than I did my own driveway and my driveway is 8/10 of a mile.

Spent the weekend in Leavenworth, got there about 10:00 pm but noticed zero snow pretty much the entire drive over. Got up Saturday morning to 15" on my car that had fallen overnight.

Went over to Sunnyside Friday. Pulled into Oak Creek and saw the same thing. Lots of elk around Randle and Packwood though!

Several western states could really use a mild winter, lets hope so

Absolutely!  I am hoping to see a bit of recovery in our local whitetail herds here in Whitman County.  Two years of bluetongue and a hard winter were not kind to deer numbers.

They've still been hanging out in the area all winter though.  I've only seen a handful from the road, but gain any elevation (hiking Royal Columns is always fun) and you'll find them.  Went up last Thursday and the ridgelines were crawling.  Had to have been 1k or so of them on the hills above the feeding station.

Watching them from 10 yards is one of my favorite things to do in the winter, but it's hard not to be happy for them with the season we've had.  Cheers to fat cows and healthy calves!

I wonder how many illegal shed hunters will be where you just mentioned this coming weekend??

Only an idiot would shed hunt there before opener.  WDFW has cameras all over the place there.
