Title: Lab only listens to me?
Post by: Commando on March 14, 2018, 04:58:13 PM
I would really like to have my daughter run my lab in a hrc test this year but he will only listen to me. I’ve been trying to get him to listen to her during training but no dice. She will try to release him than he will look at me to be sent. Anyone have any tips on how to get her to be his handler to? She will be five in just a few months.

Your daughter will be 5?

Your dog thinks of her as a pack member not a pack leader. She needs to show him that she is his superior maybe not the best idea.

Didn’t think of it like that. Thanks maybe I’ll hold off for awhile or until the next lab I get

A fast track approach that worked for me, kids feed the dogs. Dogs must obey simple commands to get fed.  Sit wait then release for eating.  Dog sees the child as a source of food, respect begins to develop.  Then I sent the kid and dog to obedience classes, or handling classes.  It helps if the kid is really interested in handling.
