Title: What’s your recipe?
Post by: lord grizzly on April 22, 2018, 12:46:03 PM: I know I’m not the only one on here baiting. so while I wait for mine to get hit and second guess my new spot until it does, I thought we could all share. I’ll start

Rocky Mountain sweet mix horse feed -(base)
Several gallons livestock molasses mixed in and spread around
Mini marshmallows
Imitation vanilla
anse on some rags
Cooking grease smeared in (10 gallons of the solid stuff )
Fryer oil poured all around Barrel
Raw bacon hanging in the trees about 30 yards both directions of trail

What are you guys running?

Post by: Twispriver on April 22, 2018, 02:10:49 PM: Back when I baited I used a lot of cheap dog food, 50# bags at a time smothered in cheap maple syrup and or molasses that I got in five gallon pails at the feed store. My brother swore by marshmellows and day-old bread products. We both always did really good and got tons of good exercise tending baits.

I'll definitely give it a try if I live somewhere where it's allowed, but doubt it would be my main thing. I'm always shocked when I hear about guys running multiple bait sites in the spring.

Yup, I have about a 6” hole in a 55 gal drum so they gotta dig at it

Post by: NRA4LIFE on April 22, 2018, 07:44:51 PM: I don't know if they have them out in ID, but we used to raid the Hostess outlet stores and buy outdated Hostess products, fruit pies, twinkies, ding dongs, etc. Used to get a whole pickup load for 5 bucks back in MO to haul up to WI.

Post by: Ridgeratt on April 25, 2018, 09:15:29 PM: Find your local oriental restaurant they use a ton of cheeken and pork. Back when I was baiting had an in at one. First time I picked up it was 55 gallon barrels I got 2 a week. After taking to them it came out in 30 gallon garbage cans you could man handle. But If you get on this make sure you are as punctual as they are because they won't save it.

Word of caution: This stuff depending of the temps will start to ferment pretty fast. So chose your transport vehicle carefully.

There was also a marvelous product I got in Montana: Called 10 dead Horse's. They weren't fibbing. I don't believe it's made anymore

Post by: Machias on April 26, 2018, 08:41:37 AM: So last year I bought 3000 pounds of bait from Wisconsin. They have 4 or 5 businesses out there that cater to bear hunters and outfitters. It cost me $450 just in shipping. I bought my stuff from this guy: https://bobsbearbait.com/ The bait is candy, frosting, gummie bears, pie fillings, etc..you name it. The bears just LOVED it. I probably gave a couple of bears diabetes, so much sugar! :) But $1000 is a LOT to spend on baiting when you can get local stuff so much cheaper. So far this year I have filled up three barrels full for $15. I use out of date bread, pies and bagels. I also mix in a little sweet COB. So far my bait has been out since Sat and Sun and the only thing getting fat is the crows. I use a 55 gallon barrel with a 5 inch hole chained to a tree.

I use old bread from the hostess store with molasses as well,dog food and sweet cob but that can get expensive. have used popcorn,scraps from restaurants, of course fryer oil, skinned out beavers, old fruit, doughnuts of course, really old pig feed, too many things to really list. I have an older man that smokes stuff year round 24/7 and he saves all the grease for me and it smells GOOD! I have not yet this year but usually hang a stink bait(suckers other non game fish) just as a long range call to help them find it. Anise,vanilla all that stuff is great too. I also can get more meat scraps than I want from a butcher. But again I think they will eat anything(almost) once they find your baits so I get what is easy and cheap or free! I have only set one bait this year and its my closest easy bait and I don't know if I would do it anymore if my son was not really into it. I have had a ton of fun over the years but just don't get that excited anymore about it. Its still my favorite time of year to be in the woods though so I will probably never stop :chuckle: fyi I called fish and game on the beavers and they said they are legal BUT they have to be skinned.

I have a saved e-mail from them several years ago, with that question and answer. The reason I saved it, was one of the gals in the Boise office, an Administrator was for a very long time telling folks beaver was not allowed. She was under the impression beaver was a game animal. I was able to get a Warden to call down and sort her out. :)

Dang that makes me hungry ! Any bear near that would be back !

Looked back at last years trail cam pics and it was the 30th before I had my first bear hit it. Still though never fails, every year I second guess my baits all April. Hopefully I’m siting in the stand till dark tomorrow
