Looks like I will be in Westport the end of august, first of sept. Thinking a tuna trip might be in order. A one day trip. Any recommendations for a charter?
-
I would start by looking at which charters offer a one day trip. I believe many are longer than that. Even if it’s one day of fishing I think they run out the night before and then back in late. The Freedom is an awesome skipper and crew that like to catch fish.
-
Westport Charters does 1 day trips if the fish are in close enough.

I had a trip on the Hula Girl - I don't know if it is any better or worse than any of the other boats.
-
Try All Star River & Salt water charters.
Mark Colman is a great skipper. It is a day charter. Leave early in the morning come back same day.

I haven’t done tuna with them just bottomfish, but the Hula Girl is a stand-up operation.

:yeah: They run 3 29' Defiance Guadalupe's and provide a good fishing experience with great Captains.

Both of my favorite Westport outfits are mentioned here.
Capt Steve and his son Jason on the Hula Girl are a great option for a day-and-half or longer trip, and Mark Coleman if you want a really fast and fun 6 pack charter experience. You might even run into one of our own members here running one of his boats.
With your time limitation, I'd give Mark Coleman a call. :twocents:

All Star is a different outfit. Coleman is All Rivers & Saltwater Charters.

Freedom, StarFire, Hula Girl....Great boats. Day trips I believe leave out at midnight, and get back late in the evening. Tons of room to stretch out on the StarFire.
-
I'll admit I already look at the SST shots. May is early but late June? Can't wait!
-
ill be going with mark coleman aug 17, getting excited, this will be the 3rd trip with his business. never disappointed.
-
Another vote here for Mark Colemans outfit.
-
Westricks( Hula Girl) are great people and a top notch operation
-
Another vote for Mark Coleman. Great experience, all 6 of us caught over 15 tuna each.
-
What does a tuna trip cost roughly?
-
The albacore generally run in a tropical stream that can range offshore anywhere between 8 miles and 130+ miles, depending on time of the year and specific weather patterns that vary year to year. You might have them over 100 mi out one year and only 12 miles offshore the next.
The duration of any tuna trip be it one day or more, or whether the boat leaves the morning of or the night before - depends entirely upon the distance out to the stream. Once they find the stream it is hot or miss - no guarantees, but when you do find them you are in them fast and furious.
Having several buddies who have it in their budgets to go each and every year - I do know that August is the preferred month.
As to price - I'm sure most if not all charter outfits listed above have websites with their price points posted.
-
Do yourself a favor and try to book a trip on Darrell Johnson's (Far Corners) Bertram that he's running along with his usaual boat. You will pay the same as Coleman but that Bertram is hands down the finest 6 pack platform in port.
-
The last couple years the tuna have seemed to be out aways. The fishing for us on six packs was pretty slow, not the fault of the skipper, but if they spend hours getting to the tuna grounds you lose valuable time. We will be doing an overnight again this year to give us more time to locate, and stay on the tuna.

I've fished with Tailwalker 3 times now 2 tuna and 1 bottomfish. 6 pack boat express day trip did really well!

Patrick is super fun to fish with!! His Coldwater is the second best platform to slaughter them on IMO.

I thought he gave up running a charter this year.

Thanks guys, Looks like the weekend of the 25th of august. Still working on details before I can book. Do you think that is getting to be to late into the season, sounds like late july, early august are the peek times?

I usually fish September and have always filled the boat. This year due to travel I’m going early August and am thinking that’s too early due to my historical limits in September. I have fished the first week of October and still filled the boat.

Mark Youngblood Sport Fishing. He is also a site sponsor

Definitely not too late, great time if you can find openings. Early September can be just as good or better. If you can't get your dates in Westport, try Youngblood in Ilwaco as mentioned above. Shake-N-Bake would be my go-to but he is usually well booked by now.
-
Darrel Johnson with Far Corners and Mark Coleman are both great outfits.... I know both if’s them and would have no problem stepping in either one if their boats.....
-
Well looks like we will book a trip over the winter for next season. Everyone had plans on the week I could go. That will leave us more options for the trip. If you had a two week window to book a trip, What weeks would you pick?
-
Labor day weekend is the epicenter of the best fishing, imho. As close to Labor day as you can get. :twocents:

Offshore NW, once you hear the twin 300 Yamaha scream pushing the 29ft Parker as fast as the seas let you you will know that Capt. Kerry Allen will get you on the grounds first. Guaranteed the most fun in Rain gear ever. Tell him Ryan sent ya
-
Kevin on the Goldrush runs a great operation and he runs one days on a big Delta Marine. I did a trip on one of the defiance 29' Guadalupe's and we caught fish but it was a rough pounding ride all the way out, was not impressed how that boat rode.

I am going with Coleman on the 11th of September. This will be my 2nd trip with him. Last trip we didn't do that well, but still had plenty of meat to take home and can -- 3 fish per person. Hope we do better this year.
