GMU 506 Willapa Hills
How often do people see Bulls over to 270" during the archery season in public land. I only see one or two each season during the archery season. ( during the archery season on public land) private property off season it does not count
-
Over 270”? Once every decade or so. If you got a spot in 506 seeing a few I wouldn’t change a thing.
-
If the spot you are seeing only one or two bulls over 270" does happen to be in 506, I sure wouldn't be posting anything on here!
-
I see zero bulls over 270 in the 506... ever. Sure there is probably a few out there but the majority of herd bulls in most of 506 or 530 for that matter are going to be closer to 200” than 250” :twocents:
-
There's a few over by the refuge..
Course you know where they are during season.
-
Hunted 506 my entire life, seen 2 that would break 270”. You’re seeing a couple a year???
-
Wow. I must be hunting the wrong part of the unit.

Yes the last 2 seasons i saw one 270"+ and a few years back i saw 2 in the same season. I must be over judging them...sorry about that.
-
maybe over judging, but if even off 30" i wouldn't go anywhere else in the 506 than the spot your goin ! :yike:
-
I've hunted that unit for 12 years or so. I've probably seen 2 or 3 that would break 250 but wouldn't touch 270. Always have archery hunted it and took one that went 246. Sounds like you've found yourself a honey hole seeing multiple 270 bulls!

:yeah:
You are hunting the wrong part! Give me your old spot and move to greener pastures.
-
506 here I come!
-
I'm there every year and the only bulls I see close to that are in the refuge. And I'm not by any means a person who knows anything about scoring but I'd say the big ones I've seen in there were probably in the 250 range + or - 50 inches given the excitement of finally seeing a bull and for it being from the highway when they're tucked all the way back in there. But even then it's been a while since I've seen one of that caliber in there. In the wild I haven't seen anything close to 270 yet, been hunting it since 2008.

There's bulls in 506? :o
Used to be . Hoof rot cleaned them all out, no Elk left. Time to buy an east side tag.
-
These were the last big Refuge bulls, took this pic 10 years ago. One on the left might have hit 270”..
-
HuntWa group hunt is now scheduled for 506. Thanks buddy! :chuckle:

Lol.
Good luck.
Hunted there for 40 years and moved on a few years ago.
When big bulls used to come out of there I would usually see a picture or hear a story. 270” ? Very very few.
A couple back in the day.
Hoof rot has numbers way down.
-
The one on the left is way over 270 right?

IMO from that pic no way all 3 are over 270. I would go maybe 200 on the middle bull after he knocks off velvet, if the bull on the right is a 5x5 225ish, maybe 250ish if he is hiding some extra. I do think the bull on the left might be a bit better than 270 but not by alot. Regardless all 3 are no brainers. Cool shot in the fog as well  I was forutnate to see the bull on the left in the refuge during season, gorgeous dark rack. Regardless of score he was a great repesentation of a classic rosie.
-
Ya I think you’re pretty spot on with the scores. Left one may push 290 I in my opinion though, he was big. It takes a heck of a roosevelt to score 270. This one we killed 10 years ago or so scored 272.

A couple of those look familiar :)

Julia butler Hansen wildlife refuge :chuckle:

Lot of hoof rot down close to the river. You're probably better off coming in from the north.
-
A $350 Weyerhaeuser access permit is required, but they're sold out.
-
What do u all think of the $435 permit fossel creek gate key sells in 506?

My partner and i scouted 506 last year before everything was shut down for fire danger. We saw probably 8-10 bulls in 3 days and not one was above a big 4x4. they had some growing to do still but nothing near even 200.

Use the search for that one. Plenty of posts about that permit from I and many others who have given our experiences on that permit.
-
The Pe ell are is famous for small horns. BUT occasionally a big one is spotted. Big being 300.

Damn I am in. 10 bulls in 3 days!! It's going to be a Hunt-Wa Bonanza, a legit circus. The Blues has nothing on the 506.

Heck you would have to put 3 or 4 of my raghorns together to hit 320" lol.

I had 3 bulls in my truck this year from down that way. They all didn’t add up to 270 and we never saw one close.
-
i've never even shot a bull that scored over 65" :'(
-
-
506 has been slower than ever the last few years due to the hoof rot. Williams Creek (673) seems to hold the most stable elk population in the sw at the moment. purchase an AFM permit and get up high, not alot of big bulls but plenty of legal bulls up there.

When you see a 270 bull in the 506..

You've been in Fossil Creek before. You asked the same question a few years ago, and got a lot of good info from that post. I never did get a response to my PM after helping either. Just sayin'.

Once upon a time.... 30 years ago.
-
Sounds like a trophy area. I better start hunting down there because it doesn't require a draw!
-
What i thought was 270 is more like 170...sorry for the unintentional false info.
I took a few on OL test and now i learned i was was off. Sorry. When you see a 270 bull in the 506..
LMAO!!!

I re-educated myself and what I thought was 270 is now only 170 sorry about that.

$435?
You could hunt out of state for a few $ more.
You could have a quality hunt and not deal with hoof rot.
I am done with SW Washington.
Try it 1 year and you will never look back.
I Quit hunting south west five years ago.
I have been hunting several different States for 20 years. I just spend more time out of state now.
Not sure it will return to what it was or even close in my lifetime.
Very sad.

:yeah:
What happened in those units is a very sad deal indeed. I don't hunt there any more, and a few years ago I never imagined ever saying that.
-
Gonna have to agree with everyone else. I hunt there now and always have since I started hunting in 2007, but if I was in the situation where I could afford the time to get out of state I would. At this point I cant even say it's about the money since it's not much more to hunt out of state than in Washington. Getting driven closer and closer to the decision every year though.
