Title: Idaho 11 and 11A Whitetail hunt
Post by: robescc on June 12, 2018, 06:52:32 PM
This year, my cousin and I are taking our daughters on their first deer hunt. My daughter is 10 and his is 12. We were going to hunt 10A but with the season change and no second deer tags for that unit, I am looking at 11 and 11A. We are going Thanksgiving week so the kids don't miss any school.
I have OnXHunt maps so I can find public area to hunt but I have no idea where to start. 11A looks good with pockets of BLM amongst farmland. I am not sure how the whitetail population is in 11 though as it looks more like muley country.
Do you guys have any input on where I should start looking? This trip is all about getting our girls their first deer. Any advise is appreciated.

I’m watching best of the West right now and a guide from crooked horn outfitters just said 11a is a completely private unit?

Lots of private land in 11a and good luck getting permission. Almost have to know someone to get permission for free access in those areas.

As stated before 11A is virtually all private and getting access will be extremely difficult. The whitetail population in both units is good but they’re mainly around the ag ground which will be private in 11 also. I’d look at other units if it were me.

When you are looking at onx in unit 11A and you see the yellow color usually associated with BLM it is with very few exceptions Nez Perce Reservation lands

onX does differentiate between Nez Perce and BLM.

Should I look at 8A? I am at a loss here. Thanks in advance.

I went on a random solo archery elk hunt in 8A two years ago in early September since I had the time off and was before my “planned” hunt during prime time.

Tho I only saw one elk during my time there, I saw a good amount of whitetail. One pretty nice buck too that I almost got a shot off with my bow. I hunted state land north of Deary west of Boville. I’d imagine a later rifle hunt there could be good for a buck. There’s Potlatch land west of there (around the town of Potlatch) that looked good and you need to buy a permit for. If I remember right the harvest stats for that unit looked pretty good on whitetail.

Good luck!

I recognize that it does differentiate between the 2, but on a zoomed out glance you may see the yellow typically associated with BLM and it most likely is not. There is very little BLM in unit 11 or 11A from what I've seen.

I've heard good things about 8A, supposed to be a lot of private timberland that allows access, potlatch I think is the big landowner in there
